Help! Failed Step 2 :(

I found out today that I failed Step 2 CK! 🙁 I've applied to tons of programs (IM, FM, and Peds), and stupidly chose the "automatic" update of my scores. I'm planning on retaking the exam by November.

I have 1 interview scheduled in November...Should I contact the program and let them know when I'm planning the retake, or just go to the interview and explain myself?

Do you think there's chance for getting any more interviews, with programs only seeing my OK Step 1 score and a failed CK attempt?

I'm freaking out, and would love any input!

How broadly did you apply beforehand? With this on your record you may want to apply for some more programs that are further down on your list.

If you failed, you obviously will be retaking Step 2. You won't have a score by the November 1st deadline at most programs. Therefore, a test date will be useless information for programs. I doubt the program would rescind your interview, but realize that your competitiveness at that program just went way down with this new information. Just have a very well-thought out answer for when the program asks you what happened.

I'll add that if you want to be ranked, you need to pass by late January, preferably sooner. No program is going to risk getting a resident who may not legally be allowed to practice medicine in their state. Even though the rank lists are due in Feb, many places probably finish interview by early Jan and do their rank meetings as early as the 3rd week of Jan.
