help finding a tech position

I'm having trouble finding a tech or aide position. Even finding it difficult to volunteer in a rehab setting! I just need hours. I have no experience which I'm sure is what is hurting. I'm a junior and pre-pt but no one is interested.

Any advice or key words to add on a resume to nail a position?

I literally emailed every single outpatient PT clinic in what I deemed to be my commutable area with my resume and a cover letter explaining my desire to be a PT and the need for observation hours. I also checked craigslist daily. I started really looking in June with an anticipated start date of August 1st, and got 3 interviews.

As for inpatient hours, I just called all of my local hospitals with PM&R programs and asked if I could observe. One hospital said that I could and then never answered the phone or called me back again. A few hospitals said that HIPAA policies did not allow for student observers unless they were already a grad student in a program. The hospital that I did end up shadowing at only let me do 17 hours but it worked out....

Just be persistent!!! It pays off, I swear!

Have you tried your local hospitals for volunteering? Most hospitals have a volunteer department that you can go through. I started contacting hospitals in my area a few months ago, and finally just landed a volunteer shadowing position that I'll start in a couple of weeks. Once you start volunteering, you can list that as experience to hopefully get a PT Tech job, if that is what you want. Just be persistent and keep trying!

As far as the tech/aide position goes all I can say is good luck. In my area, they are very hard to come buy. I have been looking very aggressively for over a year and have only seen one position open up and it was filled from within the company. Don't give up, but keep in mind that these type of jobs are somewhat rare (people that have tend to stay), in my area at least. Good luck though!

I had to start as a volunteer at a local PT outpatient clinic before I got hired. I did about 300 hours there, then volunteered another 100 hours at the local hospital for my inpatient hours. THEN, I finally got hired at the outpatient clinic.

Maybe give volunteering a shot? I know "working for free" doesn't pay the bills, but it can lead to a paying position that will.

I know how you feel! I've been looking for a PT tech job since about July, when I started doing my volunteer hours, but haven't been able to land a position. I've had 3 interviews and each seem very put off because I will only be there for about a year, if I get into PT school for Fall 2012. 🙁 We'll see what happens.
But yes, just try checking craigslist as well as local advertisements. Work on volunteering, to get familiarized with what the tech does, so it can help you if the opportunity arises. Good luck!
