Help from UNLV dental students

I was just wondering about the program at UNLV. I interviewed there and was accepted and am strongly considering going. I just wanted to hear your thoughts on the program.

Also, in the pre-dental forum there has been talk of the school closing due to funding. Is this just a rumor?

I am a 2nd year at UNLV...I took a look at that thread in the pre-dent forum and that was NOT a recent article. There was talk of closing the school back in 2005 but obviously it didn't happen. Honestly, I think even if the state withdrew all its funding they still wouldn't close the school...they would just jerk up the tuition or something. God knows, we see a lot of patients (Ryan White, medicaid, VA) here in the valley that have nowhere else to go.

There has been quite a flurry of lobbying going on as of lately...there have been a few state senators on "tours" through the school. The good news is that the legislature only meets every other year in Nevada, so it takes them a while to figure out what to do!!! But I haven't heard anything new about them closing the school. The ORTHO program is a mess...but we are still going strong here in the pre-doctoral program. If something big happens, I will let everyone on SDN know!

why did they consider closing the school? Financial or problems finding faculty? I don't think patient pool would be a problem, but I could be wrong.

There's nothing wrong with the school...it's just that the state legislature thinks it's too expensive and wants to cut our funding. It's a political thing.

Just to make myself clear: UNLV IS FINE. If you got accepted and want to come, you should come, you will get a good education here.

i loved this school when i interviewed there. i'm on hold till the next round, Jan 15th. If you're considering going to this school....DON'T!! .....so i can get in 🙂
