Hi all,
I have a predicament: I went to a canadian institution my freshman year (and let me tell you that there schools are so much more rigorous than ours) and transfered to a state school (SUNY Oswego) due to family, but my question is how to convert the canadian grades (based on percentage- not letters) to the AAMC GPA. I have emailed AAMC and they just do not get it at all- they sent me the conversion guide which has canadian on it but has like 5 rows each with different cutoff points....I could have either a C or a B in a class! So anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks

I'm Canadian and i've been trying to figure this out for a little bit.
theres a canadian forum called premed101.com but i think they might be having issues because the thread about GPA calculation is messed up (posts gone). But what i remember from it is that each Canadian school is different. the only one I remember is for my school, the university of western ontario which was... 80%+ = 4.0 70-79.9 = 3.0

these numbers were provided by canadian applicants to US schools.

but yea if u want ask around on that forum even though it seems to be a little messed up right now.

Unfortunately they did not have the Guelph conversion....ugh this is so stressfull....it really screws my scGPA if I use certain conversions...and AMCAS does not seem to want to confirm anything for me.

Ha... even Guelph is tougher than American schools. Take that Americans! 😛

AMCAS admittedly is not very useful. haha

Guelph is among the top schools in Canada, of course it would be....but for certain aspects of course. They have the top agriculture program and one of the top zoology/biology programs.

Anyways...now I have to make sure that I get a decent equivalent here in the US. I was already screwed by my current college, but luckily it doesnt count toward my US GPA (at this school)....
It really sucks because I have a 3.75 here in the US taking advanced level courses (dual major as well) but my GPA there (using Guelph's GPA conversion (not the same as AMCAS) is like a scGPA=2.5! I dont think so.
I dont think its right to see a GPA go from 2.9cum to a 3.75cum in one year...and my sciGPA is 3.72 here as well....a little bizarre.

I haven't heard too many Canadian versus US undergraduate comparisons, so what you have said is really interesting.

Try posting on premed and seeing if anyone in the current or previous application cycle has applied from Guelph and if they can help you out with the AMCAS conversion.

I e-mailed AMCAS two days ago about the specific grade conversion for York University (where I attend) to AMCAS. Maybe try e-mailing them again and ask specifically for your university, what is the conversion.
