Okay so I got my organic chem 2 grade today...it was a 6 week summer class..and I got a C+!!! My regular school is a small state school, and I have A's in all my classes. If I might say so, I'm really good at bio. For some reason, I cannot do organic chem but somehow managed an A- at my regular school. The summer organic 2 grade was from a larger state university, and I worked soooo hard because it was a nightmare taking it at a different school.

Do you think adcoms will be wary of my other A's now? I cannot even believe I got a C🙁. What should I do?! Retake it at my school to get an ochem 2 B average?? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I really was aiming to apply to good schools like Hopkins, GWU & UPitt. Do you think they will understand with it being a condensed summer class & at a different uni? Thanks so much, I am so worried. Do I have a chance at top schools??😱

I you have all A's and one C+ you should be fine. What's to say you'll retake it and get an A to average it out to a B? Think logically about it. You took a 6week class on material some people can't handle in a full semester. Focus on the future and stop dabbling in the past. You, more than likely, have 2 more years to keep your GPA at a 3.8 or 3.9 😉. Good luck. Relax.

Yeah, I agree. Unless you are really sure you can get an A, you shouldn't retake it. I don't know if they would ask you about that blip in your record, they may just ignore it.

If i remember correctly, Ochem II is the most difficult course of the series. I'm not too sure if you should retake it. It is definitely something you might want to discuss with your pre-med advisor.

But overall, it sounds like you have an excellent record and one C is not going to keep you out of top medical schools. If you do well on the MCAT, i doubt schools would raise red flags about your education at your state school. The MCAT will be the normalizer. Just make sure keep up the good work here on out and do well on the MCAT (30+) and do volunteer work. Good Luck! Go enjoy your summer!

Thanks for the optimistic feedback, I feel a bit better now. I was thinking ochem 2 would be easier the second time around and would help with the ochem on the MCAT but maybe I won't retake it. I guess I'll have to talk to my advisor. I have a lot of hospital & other volunteering and will be tutoring bio this fall, so hopefully that will help as well & show my love for bio. Also, you're right that I have 2 years to keep the gpa at ~3.8.

I would say retake it. But again, I'm no expert. But to me grade distribution in Ugrad to med school basically translates into:
A- average
B- bad
C- catastrophic
D- death

i wouldn't worry about C.

as far as it exposing your other grades from your college-- i think med schools generally have a good idea what an A means at a particular university. i understand that some med schools apply gpa conversions. for example, a 3.8 from harvard may be standardized to a 3.7 due to perceived grade inflation. so, if your A's are "weak" then i imagine med schools already know.

but, seriously, you're fine. don't worry about it.

I don't think you should re-take it. Keep getting As though in the rest of your classes.

About getting into medical school, you don't have anything to worry about. If you want to go to a top 10 school, you need much better extracurriculars than volunteering at a hospital and shadowing.
