A lot of schools ask for how you can contribute to diversity. The problem is, I am not diverse. I am a southeast asian student who enjoys research and is good in science classes.

I find it hard to believe that there is nothing diverse about me though - what counts towards diversity? Maybe I have osmething that I am not considering...

Any help is appreciated!

Life experiences, hobbies, basically anything that you think makes you different from the norm.

Can you speak another language? Can you play the **** out of an instrument? Are you athletic? Can you do ANYTHING interesting?

I'm assuming you spent the 4 - 5 years of your undergrad as a ninja locked away in a room somewhere trying to bust the curve in every class you took and graduated with a 4.0 and got a 45 MCAT with no experiences outside of research and clinical areas. C'mon SON! I know you did something outside of being a pre-med.

Everyone does research and science classes--yeah you are right. But what kind of research? What have you contributed while doing research? How do you feel like your academic and extracurricular experiences impacted you, how have they shaped you as a person? What circumstances have shaped your life and made you decide to follow this path? No one can answer these questions for you and only you can answer this question. This is what makes you unique. 😎

You still lend more diversity than an upper middle class white person. Ask one of your friends what is different about you, maybe they'll come up with something. Cognitively it is really hard to do that for yourself, since to you everything is just normal.

-_- thanks lol

Well so long as you hit all the checkboxes"

good GPA, good MCAT, some clinical exposure, some volunteer work

then you will certainly be able to get accepted somewhere, maybe not Harvard, but most medical schools are half full of "boring" pre-meds

Half of us are going to be pretty normal by sheer statistics.

Being "diverse" helps you, however it does not follow that being "not diverse" hurts you.

I don't believe that the opposite of "diverse" is "normal" but maybe that's just me.

Think about the diversity essay this way, OP: Complete this sentence: I may be the only member of my med school class who has....

grown in up in (town)
backpacked through (very remote place)
grandma's recipe for (foreign delicacy) and knows how to make it
fluency in (language)
made/rebuilt/repaired (object)
played HS/college (obscure sport)
spent time in the (subculture) community

Go with any one of those and you've got it.

Go get kidnapped. Have something interesting happen to you. Be reckless; that's always worked for me.

I put a lot of weight on Lizzy's comments, because of her experienced adcomm status..

Is she actually suggesting these topics or saying they are cliche?

I'm having a tough time determining..'diversity mad-libs' makes me think it's sarcastic.
Anyone else?

*Also, most of the list is straight from stuffwhitepeoplelike ( http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/full-list-of-stuff-white-people-like/ )

I'm fairly certain she's serious, and I think it is a very good idea. Just make sure it doesn't go something like: "I may be the only member of my med school class who has...

grown up in [a van down by the river]
backpacked through [your home]
grandma's recipe for [human brains] and knows how to make it
fluency in [Parseltounge]
made/rebuilt/repaired [a pipebomb]
played HS/college [KY wrestling]
spent time in the [white supremacist] community

grown in up in (large city)
backpacked through (campus)
grandma's recipe for (ice tea) and knows how to make it
fluency in (only english)
made/rebuilt/repaired (computer)
played HS/college (football,track)
spent time in the (greek) community

Go with any one of those and you've got it.[/QUOTE]

lol ^^^ This guy's got the smooth road ahead of him

Diversity can also be political, intellectual. Diversity isn't solely the color of your skin.
