Ok guys, here's the deal: I have a borderline D+/C in orgo 1. I hate to sound like I'm making excuses. My prof sucks, is a horrible teacher, doesn't curve and 2/3 of the class is failing. I suck too, am stupid, etc, etc. So my choices are to take it with the same prof next semester if i can even get by with a C now. I right now have 21 credits plus a senior thesis next semester. Or I could take it post bac in summer school, probably at a CC (due to expenses) where professors.com say he's a great prof but at the same time as I'm sending in my AMCAS. I plan to apply allopathic and osteopathic and plan to take the MCAT in June or July after graduation.

Your post was a little bit confusing which I am sure is due to your obvious panic. I believe that I was able to accurately decipher it and I think your options are as follows: 1) Bribe the teacher with money, 2) Bribe the teacher with sex, or 3) Drop it and retake the class. The W is not great, but if you get a C- or D not only will it look bad and affect your GPA, but it won't count as a pre-req and you will have to retake it anyway. I took the MCAT without taking organic chemistry first and it definitely affected my BS score. Why can't you take it at a CC in the spring? That way you will have the first semester prior to taking the MCAT and I think that will really help. :luck:

I got screwed by a bad professor in Organic I and II. That said, I still got into med school and invited to interview at two more (outcome pending). Don't worry about a withdrawal. No one cares about those any more. Take the class at ANY accredited school that offers it, and do well in it.

Have you been reading and taking the opportunity to work most, if not all, of the problems in each chapter? I've had to pretty much self-teach myself, but have had pretty good luck. Another Org. II test on Monday.

I wouldn't take 21 hours plus Orgo...that's for sure.

I agree, I would NOT take Orgo 2 with a 21 hour load. If you get a C- you will have to take the class again. Your choices are to work for the C (not C-) or to drop the class. I would say if you are really that worried to drop the class and take it in the summer. If you think you can get a better prof. in the summer than do that, I swear that it's not about being dumb it's just being lucky enough to have a good teacher. Try not to stress too much most if not all of us have been in situations like this with school and we have all gotten through them and so will you. 🙂 👍

It's almost thanksgiving; it's waaaay past time to drop and get a W. It would now be an F; dropping is not an option. Actually I won't get a C-; he doesn't give them. So at best I'll get a C; right now i have a D+ (69.9, but have another exam to go and a B+ in labs).

I go to a state school too far from a CC so IU can't take it in CC in the spring, only in the summer. besides I graduate next semester and need my other courses and honors thesis at my state school. So it's either orgo 2 at my present school with the present sucky prof or in the summer post-bac at a CC with a seemingly great prof.

Well, I actually had a D in my Orgo1 class and just retook it and was able to replace my old grade with my new grade so it didn't end up negatively affecting my GPA. So, maybe you could do that. Also, does your school have an audit grade option? At the university I go to they have an option that you can audit the class up to the last day of school and then your GPA will definetly not be affected. For auditing at my university you do need the prof.'s and the dean's approval, however. It does sound like that you may be able to pull off the C though! 😀

here's my advice from someone that struggled with orgo, if you can get a C and move on then do that, I got a C in Orgo I (and II 😳 ) but was able to do well in other classes and the MCAT and I got in med-school. Don't stress out too much over one course.

HINT: you need "some" orgo knowledge on the MCAT but pretty much nil in med-school. You do need to know biochem which has some foundations in orgo so don't forget everything. Hopefully you'll get it sorted out before Thanksgiving!
