I just recently was "converted" to anesthesia. I had planned on surgery, but realized that I was a much better fit for anesthesia. I absolutely love everything about it. The problem? It's mid July and I need to get in some rotations for my 4th year...STAT.

I have one set up in November and one in January, but I have September open and wondered if anyone had advice on how to get into a rotation in this short of notice?

I'm looking mainly in the Mid-West & Western states (MO, KS, IL, OK, TX, CO, etc.). Any help would be appreciated, especially connections, if you have them. Thanks.

Make a list (eg. using FRIEDA) of programs in locations of interest.

Most of the websites should have information for "visiting students." If not, find a phone number for the department and ask them if they have anything.

It's pretty late in the year, so your chance of getting a September rotation at a place where you really, really want to go is a little slim. If you want one, I would make a big list and phone/email the coordinators of each clerkship pronto -- if they have an opening, ask the coordinator if s/he would be able to PENCIL YOU IN NOW and reserve the space while your clerkship application forms are still going through the mail.

However.... three away rotations is a lot and you really don't need them. You have already done one at your school and you have one scheduled in November (one away is more than enough). January is pretty late for an away and you'll either be doing or done with your interviews by then.

I'd say, if you are able to get a September rotation, cancel the January one. Or cancel the January rotation regardless of whether you get a September one. It's rather repetitive and pointless to do a total of 4 months of anesthesia as a medical student (and even 3 months -- one home, two away -- are pushing it and you'll be ready to kill yourself by the end).

My anesthesia rotation prior to ERAS was at a site without a residency. Still got great letters and something to write about from the rotation. Worked out well in the end.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I'll keep working on it, but if anyone has more info, I'd love to hear it.

the nicest people and program I have dealt with so far is umiss -- if they don't have an opening in anes try their perioperative medicine rotation that is through the anesthesiology department. i can't say enough nice things about how easy they have been to deal with.
