Hey all,

As the school year begins, I find myself wondering whether I am going about this the right way...any advice would be much appreciated.

I am a 2nd year Post Bacc student at SF State and have already completed Gen Chem I, Bio I, Orgo I, and Physics I (and anatomy and a bio anthro class). I am currently taking Gen Chem II, Bio II, and Physics II this fall along with a class on the biology of AIDS. Outside of class, I commute 2 hours a day, volunteer at the UCSF ER and at a clinic in the mission, AND work at Starbucks. I know, it sounds ridiculously crazy but so far it has been manageable.

The plan has been to apply to medical school next year. In order to accomplish this I need to take Orgo II + lab, and the Gen Chem II lab as well as the Princeton MCAT review course in the spring.

So, everything was set until I applied for a research internship at UCSF. It is REALLY hard to get "in" there so I feel like I should take the position if I am offered it. I really want to do some research to figure out if I want to pursue the MD/PhD...So, basically, I don't think I can add that internship to my already ridiculously busy schedule.

If I take the internship I will drop Gen Chem II..basically forcing me to have to wait a year to apply. What do you guys think? Is it worth taking the extra year to get in some research and upper division courses, or should I just stick to my plan to finish and apply next year? If it makes a difference I just turned 26 today!

The drop deadline is Friday so I need to figure this out.. Thanks so much for your help!

Personally, I would just apply next year...but I'm not that into research. I'd be perfectly happy doing research during med school, rather than pursuing the whole PhD thing. Is there a way you could finish Gen Chem II later in the year? (you have to have the prereqs done before matriculation, not application) You could take the MCAT without Gen Chem II, since you'll be in a formal review course. Orgo II is not necessary for the MCAT, so is there a way that this could be pushed back?

Good luck, and happy birthday!

What little I know about MD/PhD is that it is usually extremely competitive. Many programs are tuition free and provide a yearly stipend. The numbers I have heard about a couple programs is usually in the very top stats wise (>3.8 and >35 MCAT) and less than 10 spots in a class. Just advising you to become educated about the program.
