I don't know if anyone can offer me any advice on this situation. I am on the tail end of internship and have accepted my dream fellowship for the fall. The state I am going to requires a limited doctoral license. I am graduating from an APA accredited program. The state has listed as one of its course requirements "one course in scientific and professional ethics and standards."

My program did not have a separate class for this; rather, this was integrated into our clinical and research classes. Does anyone have any idea if that would suffice, or if I am screwed? Or if there is an online option to get such a course? I've found CE credit classes through APA, but I don't know if that would do it.

Any help or advice would be profoundly appreciated, as I am really needing to engage in those mindfulness skills at the moment to ward off a full on panic attack!

I've used this site once or twice in the past when I came up short for CEUs at the end of the year. Less a problem now that I'm at the VA, though. I think they offer a couple of online courses which might fit the bill.

You'd want to check with the requirements of the state licensing board where you'd be obtaining the limited permit in order to determine whether online courses can suffice. I remember I had to get a limited permit when I did my postdoc in New York State.

You really need to check with the board of the state in which you wish to be licensed.

I'm not sure if an online CE course could substitute for a semester-long course in professional ethics. Hope you can work it out...

I know calling my state board was an excellent educational process. I was able to talk directly to one of the main psychologist staff members and she gave me answers to questions I had about state laws and ethics cases!

Agree with the above, but we have been told numerous times by our faculty that problems like this can usually be resolved as long as you are coming from a legit program. It usually entails submitting syllabi from courses that you are arguing "cover" the requisite topics.

We were recently told of a grad who had to go through this for a state that requires a diversity class. We have 2 semesters that focus pretty heavily on diversity issues in what is labeled "Intro to clinical", and it is covered for at least a week or two in virtually every core clinical course that we take, but the specific diversity seminar is not required. To my knowledge, it has never posed a problem and people are able to get it waived as long as they submit material supporting that the topic was sufficiently covered.

This is why everyone is always told to save their syllabi🙂

Thanks, Ollie and everyone. I hope that this holds up... my advisor says that it always has worked, but the board takes some time to make their decisions. This is so nerve-racking. Luckily I did keep all my syllabi.
After all of the nightmares of this process, APPIC, fellowship hunt, etc.... this feels just awful.

If you are going to another state and they are fussy about it not being a formal course, you might propose taking a CE law/ethics course from APA or in their state that is post-degree but meets requirements. Folks often have to do this when transferring licensure so I imagine they have accomodations for this.

This is good to hear - it wouldn't be a problem at all and in fact might be something I'd want to do anyway since it would hopefully make getting fully licensed easier. I didn't know that people did that when transferring licensure.

Thank you. I am feeling more hopeful overall that this is something that can be dealt with, rather than a fellowship killer.
