okay here goes.....I work at the chariman's lab and he has agreed to write a letter of rec on my behalf but he plans to co-sign the letter with my P.I, is it bad to have an individual letter signed by both? he basically is mentioning that he has placed me under my PI and has said a lot of great things about me. what do I do?? plz any advice? should I hve only the chairman sign it and get a differnt letter frm my PI or should I go ahead and have them both co-sign??

Doesn't sound like a separate letter is an option if the chairman has already decided how he wants to do it - you really don't have control over how or when a letter is written. But I see nothing wrong with having two signatures on a letter if there is a logical relationship between the two (like working in the same lab with you) - I imagine it will end-up being a very strong letter that you will be thankful to have. Not a problem.

It's fine to have two people sign it. The first lab I worked in I was helping a graduate student with her dissertation. When I asked for a letter I asked to have the grad student write it, and the director of the lab (who I'd only met a few times) co-sign it, since the director had the name recognition, but wouldn't have been able to write me a strong letter.
