long story short is I'm 21, work full time really good job, putting gf through RN school and I thought I wanted to go the same route, BSN to CRNA, after lots of soul searching praying etc, MD is the way to go. I have just a few questions about GPA, I'm at a CC now, but will transfer to UTSA here in San Antonio TX here soon....my question is does my cumulative GPA make the biggest impact to Medical school or does my Sgpa make the most impact, my science is really high 3.7-3.9 but my overall is about a 2.7 at the moment. Will start all the physics, ochem, chem, bio classes here soon, I did the math and with good good grades I should be well over 3.3-3.5 overall and a good science GPA, will my overall now hurt me? I searched the forums, I'm not, thankful for all help and guidance look forward to talking to y'all. THanks.

Med schools will see a year-by-year breakdown of your grades, parsed into 'cumulative', 'science/math', and 'all others'. Intuitively, I would think that science GPAs are given a closer look, but that's just a guess on my part. Grade trends are taken into account for those who got off to slow starts but turned things around. Some schools have GPA or MCAT cut-offs, below which they generally won't consider you seriously. A 3.3-3.5 should at least get you beyond any automatic screens.

the thing is that it is easy to do the math to do the grade projection but difficult to put the effort required to get those grades up. a 3.3-3.5 is on the lower end for most schools but it isn't necessarily impossible, especially if you complement it with a great mcat score and extracurriculars. just try your best in all of your classes and take it from there.
