Out of curiosity, did she mention what WAS available? It seemed fairly empty when I toured (or maybe just quiet from all the studying) so I'm curious how full they are.

I know it's been mentioned on here that 600 Main street apts house a lot of MCP students. But, they start at 950 I believe. Otherwise there are lots of complexes in Worcester. PM me if I can help with a more specific ?- like area quality, distance, etc.

Good luck 🙂

$950? Is it two bedrooms or one bedroom? I was going to stay in dorm but it was very expensive as far as I remember. Since my brother is in boston, I will probably go to there a bit earlier and stay with him to find a place. I am wondering where I can find a roomate though. I wish I don't have to pay more than $500 including utility but I will see. California is not the only expensive place, I guess. By the way, is "600 Main street apts house" walking distance? If so, I am willing to sacrifice the price.

no i send my housing application the same week she send it back to me, i spoke with her yesterday and she said that the have other appratment but no the one i wanted,
i requested 2 bedrooms but she said i can only get 4 or 6brs and that's not what i want

Yes....600 Main street is 2 blocks from the school and within walking distance...There are also a few nice apt complexes in surrounding suburbs of Worcester like Shrewsbury, Northboro, Hudson etc...that are cheaper than 950, you should go on rent.com or apartmentguide.com and put in the towns and check out the places

I just got a studio in Shrewsbury Commons...$840 a month and it's really nice. I wanted to live on campus too but all they had left were 4 and 6 person suites which I really didn't want...wish I had known that before I sent in my NONREFUNDABLE $250 deposit...oh well!!! I found Shrewsbury Commons on rent.com

Man, that's very expensive. I checked the price for a studio around worcester on line and I have found that there are a couple of studios with the price range of $550~600. However, I am not sure if they are still available or how nice place they are. By the way, how far is the Shrewsbury Commons from the school?

It's about 20 minutes from school if I take rt 9...i'm not sure how long it takes to go any other way. It is expensive but not much more than it costs to live on campus and it's a really nice place. Good luck!

Did you get 20 minutes from Mapquest or a similar site? There's a good chance it may take longer--Rt 9 has a lot of lights, a lot of traffic, and 2 ERs within about a mile of each other, so lots of ambulances too!

Yeah, considering when you'll be driving to/from school, route 9 s*cks. But, if I had to choose between living there and commuting a little, or living in a not-so-safe neighborhood, I'd commute.
Plus, there is lots of stores/etc on route 9 so you could get all your errands done on the way home.
There is also several shortcuts that will save you some grief...ask a local when you get here & we'll clue ya in 🙂

Just to clarify- you can get places in that range, but they come with either a long commute (like you're living in Rutland-where "ya can't get there from here"),a roommate, or are in a not-so-nice area. Personally, I'd rather spend an extra few hundred.

Everyone, if you don't live around here, I recommend you check out the neighborhood of any prospective apts before commiting. Worcester is a large city and there are BIG variations. Don't assume because the listing says nice neighborhood that it actually is. The $$ says more about the nieghborhood than the apt salesman 😉

Hope that helps. 🙂

Hey...I actually drove it when I went to look at the apartment. I'm sure it will be more or less depending on lights and traffic and what time I leave the house/school. I'm not worried though...as long as it's no more than 45 minutes. Thanks for your help.

Thanks...yeah living in a safe neighborhood was my main reason for picking that apartment. I live with my boyfriend now so it's gonna be hard enough to live on my own...it would be even worse if it was in a scary place.

Does anyone know about the apartment below? Is it located in bad area? The price for studio ($550) looks reasonable.

Bancroft Commons
50 Franklin St
Worcester, MA 01608

Off the bat I noticed it is downtown, but downtown is always revitalizing so that isn't always necessarily a bad thing. Check out www.apartmentratings.com and do a google search for "bancroft commons" worcester. I personally wouldn't live there.

Honestly, truly, you get what you pay for. If you want a cheap apt, ESPECIALLY if it is an apartment complex, you'll have to choose between roommate, commute, or questionable area.

Have you thought about trying to get an apt via the three-decker or private rental route? I think you'll be far more likely to get something cheaper in a more reasonable area.

Good luck 🙂

p.s. I told my hubby about this and he's now trying to convince me to rent out a bedroom of ours, 🙄 lmao. Our mortgage (before taxes & utilities though) is 875 and these apartment complexes are getting the same or more. CRAZY!!

I just checked the opinions for the "Bancroft commons". I guess you are very very right that it is not a good place to live. I wish I can live in 600 Main, but just can't afford $900 one bedroom. By the way what is the three-decker? How can I find the private rental route? Do you mean that I better find a realtor and talk to them directly? It is so much of headache for me finding a place with a limited budget.

Thank you very much pharmforme.

I was just browsing through some of the posts on this thread and I thought I should throw out another possible option. I actually have a mutual friend whose parents own property in the Worcester. I'm pretty sure they rent out rooms to college students for a relatively cheap price. I could definitely get more details and availability if anyone is interested. The friend is actually a Worcester native, so he knows the area really well. I'm sure if his parents still have rooms available, you could definitely work something out with them. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I could get in contact with him.

You get what you pay for...we pay $1450 for a 2 bed/2 bath, which is definitely high for this area, but totally worth it.

Our apartment is a two bedroom/one bath on Plantation Street and it is 1070 a month. We have visited a couple of times and it seems like a nice area and the complex was very nice. They had one bedrooms available too.
