I have never been interested in plastic surgery, but I am trying to be open minded about it. I don't want to judge plastic surgeons right away, but honestly I don't currently hold a very high opinion of your kind.

My main question is this - what motivates you? Personally, I feel like if I were a plastic surgeon I would have trouble going in to work every morning, knowing that I could actually be helping people who are dying from health problems, but instead I've sold my soul to the devil so that I can make a few extra bucks.

Could you enlighten me on this subject? Are all plastic surgeons just greedy, heartless individuals who are only in it for the money, or do some of you have other, nobler reasons for wanting to be plastic surgeons?

I'm seriously trying to be open minded about this, which is why I'm asking you guys. Please, let's all be mature and have an open discussion that is free of all judgement.

"Free from all judgement?" You just judged the crap out of every plastic surgeon.

Go away. Or at least keep your Mother Teresa trolling in pre-allo.
Wow. It's people like you that lead me to believe that all plastic surgeons are heartless.

I'm not a plastic surgeon. I just had to respond after reading your other posts today.

Few things on SDN annoy me more than the "save the world, if you aren't doing rural FM and taking chickens for payment you are a monster," trolling.

@breakmon has no idea what plastic surgery entails. Says let's have a discussion free of all judgement, has an unfounded bad opinion of all plastic surgeons.

I agree that I have a bad opinion of all plastic surgeons. But the reason I started this thread was so that I could change. I want to change. I don't like my judgmental attitude toward them and that's why I came here for help.

Well no physician is going to take your idiocy seriously, so please be courteous and leave their sub-forum. It is for physicians only or those who have legitimate questions about the profession which are neither asinine or impertinent. Your's is both.

As others have implied, you have a very narrow and distorted view of the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. While there are certainly practitioners who only do aesthetics, a large number concentrate on repairing congenital, traumatic and otherwise acquired deformities.

The infant born with a cleft lip and palate, the police officer burned when his patrol car was hit from behind, the woman who loses a breast to cancer: these and many others are treated by plastic surgeons; their services are valuable and to suggest otherwise is insulting.

Moving to Pre-Allo as the OP is a pre-med student.

My main question is this - what motivates you? Personally, I feel like if I were a douche I would have trouble posting on SDN, knowing that I could actually be helping people who are trying to become doctors, but instead I've sold my soul to the devil so that I can make a few god awful posts.

Could you enlighten me on this subject? Is breakmon just an obnoxious, heartless individual who is only in it for the lawlz, or does he have other, douchier reasons for wanting to be a mediocre troll?

Yo. Fixed that for you^.

A friend of mine was in a terrible motorcycle accident and barely made it out alive. I only found out about it when we were traveling together on business and he set off the metal detector and had to be hand-beeped. That man had more metal in his body than, well... Pins, screws, plates everywhere. Anyway, a plastic surgeon (apparently a very talented one) put his face back together again in such a way that you couldn't even tell anything had ever been wrong. It was only when he showed me the 'before' picture that I could even begin to comprehend the damage that must have been done. His 'after' face was very normal, attractive even, but substantially different from the 'before' face. Don't tell me that plastic surgeon didn't save somebody's life.

When I was on plastics I had an interesting patient interaction.

A patient came in with a busted face after a syncopal episode (they landed against a counter I think?). I was the plastics resident on call and sutured everything back together again, including a really deep through and through laceration involving the vermillion border.

Long story short, it turned out the underlying etiology of the syncope was a cardiac episode and ended up getting a CABG in the same admission.

Like, 10 days later or something, I had moved on to a new rotation, and I got a page from a nurse about this patient. They were being discharged, and all they wanted before going home was to thank the person who'd fixed their face!

It was one of those gratifying moments in residency.

whenever I get asked about a specific moment I remember from shadowing or interacting with a patient, there is always this one time I talk about when I was shadowing a plastic surgeon. I legitimately want to cry (happy tears!) every time I remember it, it was very touching. They are definitely not all greedy, heartless individuals.
OP, maybe you should actually shadow a plastic surgeon and see what they do before you make judgments.

If you don't wanna do it, don't do it.

Simple, really.

firstly, lol. second, @breakmon, you may as well walk into someones house, tell them their house looks like s*^&, and then ask them to tell you why they like living there.

a little common sense goes a long way. especially when applying to med school.

She's gotta be like the most epic troll in SDN history. Did you see that cease and desist letter she posted on her blog?
That letter was impressive, but the blog is ridiculous. Streampaw with all her iterations must be insane. For anyone to fixate on the things that she does is demonstrating some serious mental fragility and an absolute lack of emotional self awareness. It's a bit frightening to know the world is populated by many streampaws.

You just got yourself an entry in the blog, bud.

What specialty are you interested in? (PS - don't say Derm)

That goes beyond trolling. To start a blog about trolling SDN? If it truly wanted to get into medical school it would not be doing those kinds of activities. It seems like it has legitimate mental issues that needs to be worked out. Either that or it's a kid.

The rest of her time is spent skinning her victims to practice dermatology and to make clothing for the taxidermied corpse of her "lawyer boyfriend" who was actually her chemistry lab partner who got accepted to med school.

That's probably the kind of person she is, right?

It's possible.

Aside from the myriad reconstructive and life-changing surgeries performed by these surgeons, I reject the premise that there is something inherently wrong with making money in medicine. I can think of a million other professions that make way more money and do actual HARM to people or the environment (as opposed to not doing enough 'good'). You can always join the priesthood, you know, unless you're a woman or openly gay... If people are willing to pay for a service, so be it.

well it makes for some really annoying premeds

Regarding Streampaw:

I read through the blog in its entirety.

Obviously, this individual is suffering, and I'm actually concerned for her well-being. Unfortunately, the consistent mockery and insult from SDN community will probably do more harm than good, so I hope that SDN can find a way to remove her from the community once and for all. If that's not possible, maybe we can remove the mockery and insults from the SDN community that reference this individual, at least.

Although I had laughed at all the comments posted on her blog and many of them here, the sum of them in the proper context has left me feeling sad and empathetic. Mental illness is terrible. 🤔

She has been permabanned. She can't come back
