I'm trying to choose what my second away rotation should be. It's between Henry Ford and Albert Einstein in Philly. I have never been to either city, and from what I can gather on SDN and elsewhere online, it looks like they both would be good opportunities. Does anybody have any advance for me? I'm so worried about making the right choice!

Two important considerations are:

1) What part of the country you want to end up in (ie Midwest vs NE). Not only will doing well on the rotation help your chances at the given program, but you'll be more likely to get interviews at nearby programs.

2) The word on the street on how good an experience the STUDENT rotation is. Try not to let a residency's reputation fill in for this as they don't always correlate.

Hard choice... I know personally that Albert einstein is a great place to rotate, You will learn tons, and be able to do procedures galore. I didnt rotate at henry ford but I did interview there and they are also impressive. Both seem to be rotation dependent. Henry ford during my interview asked me why I didnt do any MI rotations but applied there.

Both are good, do research on both programs and go to the one you would lean to for residency.

If you haven't already done so, apply for them both. If you are unable to secure a spot at one of the hospitals, well, then the decision has been made for you. Hospitals give preference for their own students - eg, Wayne State students for HF. As an away student, you might not be able to schedule an away at your desired time. If you get them both, then drop one of them. Just drop it early - programs shouldn't care if you give them enough time.

Don't worry about making a wrong choice. Both programs are well enough known that a SLOR will be meaningful and should provide a good learning opportunity. As a previous poster mentioned, if you'd rather live out east ultimately, choose AE. If midwest, then HF.

Thank you all for the replies thus far!

That's what I'm hoping for - to show programs that I'm willing and able to venture out of my comfort zone out West. Sadly, I was hoping that doing either one of these might open some doors from both regions, but from the looks of NYEMMED's experience, it appears that the programs do appear to make more of a distinction in Midwest vs East Coast than I do!

I've heard of similar situations, and it seems so strange to me. There aren't enough months in fourth year to fit in rotations at every place I'll be applying, sadly.

If you haven't already done so, apply for them both.

I got lucky and have a spot at both of them currently. I'm hoping you're right that they won't fault me too much if I don't accept my spot and leave them with plenty of advanced notice. I guess I'm just paranoid about burning bridges that might come in handy around interview season!

i think it depends on where your first away rotation is. i was in a similar situation being from the west coast and looking to branch out so i did one away in the midwest and one on the eastern seaboard.

i know henry ford is a great place but don't know too much about their med student rotation. don't know anything about einstein

Henry Ford has on campus housing (apartments/dorms for rent). Might make the decision easier if you don't have to find housing.
