Help me decide where to apply, pleaaaaase

Hey fellow West Virginian! Don't where'd you do your undergrad? I wouldn't knock WVU or Marshall too quickly. They are both very good at what they do and offer some really neat programs. You get a lot of bang for your buck at WVU and Marshall if you know how to take advantage of it. I went to undergrad out of state and, like you, applied to the WV state schools rather unsure of whether I'd REALLY want to come back. When I went to those interviews though, I really got an appreciation of what they're all about. Marshall really knocked my socks off and I really wasn't expecting that. Now they're throwing money at me and it's getting harder and harder to turn them dodwn. Just for perspective, I have accepts elsewhere so I'm not just trying to psych myself up for mediocrity. At the very least, be sure you're not applying there as a back-up only because they'll see right through your motives.

best of luck...

There's internet in West Virginia? I kid...

You'll do alright. I think that's a very reasonable list. I totally understand not wanting to go back to Morgantown. I'm about 20 mins outside of Huntington, which is my primary hesitation about Marshall. I've been living in the area since the summer and already I'm goin nuts.

From my own visits to Case, I don't think that it is laid back or the atmosphere was cooperative, etc etc, however this was only from a VISIT. Maybe someone from Case can testify? UMich (I am biased as I am alum) has a great reputation with an awesome atmosphere, and they take about 50& out of staters. Other great state schools would be OSU (also biased because I have friends that go there who are out of state) as the program is ranked and is up and coming after recruiting their chair from Hopkins. Their out of state numbers fluctuate (20% in 2002, 30 some in 2003, less in 2004). UPitt is also an awesome choice for program strength, atmosphere, etc, I would also suggest Emory and Tufts (although these are not state programs). I liked those programs, and they within your reach, at least numbers wise. Look into those programs, and good luck.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I have actually heard the same thing about Case from a current student (third year I think). He mentioned that the incoming classes were getting more competitive/cutthroat, so I was concerned.
I've heard the same of UMich though. Not that it matters, b/c UMich is a reach for me.

So OSU (Ohio State, right?) is so much better than WVU that paying the out-of-state tuition would be worth it? I had no idea.

For some reason, I have a very bad opinion of TUfts, in terms of student satisfaction, etc. Maybe it's because the guy who wrote Heart Failure - Diary of a Third Year Medical Student graduated from there

thanks a lot for your input!

Just to let you know, Univ of Illinois is over 50K/year for out of staters, quite a pricey proposition.

yikes, that's a lot. I was just checking the USNews rankings, to get some idea of where these med schools stand, and I didn't see UIllinois...

So maybe i'll take it off my list

Colorado is worse... upwards of 70k for the first year as I understand it. Then, yes, you become in-state and get the lower price.

I have no idea about WVU, but just so you know, Ohio State recently voted to lower out-of-state tuition by $10,000 each year for out-of-staters. 👍

Yeah, Ohio State is a pretty good program from what I hear, and the students are pretty happy with the integrated program (phys, path, pharm, etc all taught in organ systems). Plus the school is not in down town, making it convenient. In any case, tuition for out of state is an extra 24k or so for the first year only last year (and maybe lower next year from the last post). Ohio has very lenient residency rules, and all of my friends got residency after the first year, so they think its worth it. I didn't know that stuff about Tufts, but I applied 3 years ago too. Let me know if you need more info about osu, I'll put you in contact with a friend there. Good luck.

Vanderbilt!

I just loved it when I interviewed. Everyone was so nice and the students all seemed to cooperate. The only downfall, the very conservative curriculum.

If you are applying early and want back up schools, consider either of the KY allo schools..... (you didn't mention osteopathic schools, so I assumed DO isn't up your alley)

Forget about Baylor. You aren't a Texas resident. To get in as a non-resident you need stellar stats.

Definitely check out UVA, I thought it was pretty laidback when I visited. A lot of Princeton people seem to like Vanderbilt too - so check into that as well.

Yes, UVA is a very nice school. Seems like it should be a definite of your application list considering its relatively good reputation and location near to your home.

In addition to Baylor, if you are set to a certain number of schools to apply to I would remove a few(not all) of the public state schools (illinois, colorado, wisconsin, iowa, ohsu, uva) and add a few more private schools. All the state schools are very good, but you dont have as many open seats to compete for, keep the ones you really like. To replace them I would choose schools that interest you from the likes of Vanderbilt, U Chicago, Northwestern, Emory, Einstein, MSSM, Tulane, SLU, maybe an Ivy or two since you are from princeton. A good variety of schools with a couple safety and a good number of reach schools and you should do well with your stats.
