Currently, I'm just on the exec board of a volunteer organization and a MD/PHD organization and I do research 10 hours a week. I also volunteer at a hospice and plan on volunteering at a low income clinic. I also volunteer at other non-clinical places around gainesville tutoring people or teaching tennis.

However, I always feel like I'm not doing enough. How do I find shadowing? Doctors won't respond to me. Also, my best friend started doing EMR at football games and I feel very jealous because I'm afraid that might place him at an advantage over me. Also, he leads these volunteer trips to other parts of the country and also does research and is one position higher in an organization I'm in (He's VP, I'm treasurer).

Help!

Ask advisors/other premeds what they're doing.

Stop worrying about your friend. The only person you should be worrying about is you.

Check with your local houses of worship for volunteering opportunities.

And stop think like a pre-med with a check list mentality. Do what you love and love what you do.

For shadowing, network with the clincians you meet. You should always start with your own doctor.

Help! currently a sophomore in college planning to add in a lot more hours.

So far I have:
40 hours hospital volunteering
60 non clinical volunteering working at a Saturday school for kids who need scholarships.
Plan to volunteer at the animal shelter starting next week & also this spring I hope to shadow a Pediatrician.
Also, have the opportunity to research at a dolphin encounter program in the Bahamas.. how many hours are sufficient and what needs to be added?
-member of phi theta kappa and biology club

Divorce yourself of this mentality now or you'll never be content. You do you.

The minute I started doing me, my CV sold itself.

What do you want to do? Do that.

The one EC I'm doing that I didn't actually want to do makes things miserable at meetings. I never really wanted it in the first place but it kinda got left to me to take care of. It was a similar case with one of the initial clinical volunteering positions I tried where I wasn't into what I was doing.

Trust me on this and don't do things just to do them. At least for the volunteering I still learned quite a bit from it and I found out I'd prefer something else. With the EC thing though I'm most likely not even gonna mention it in my app because I can't honestly speak about it too positively, only reason I might mention it at all is because there was one thing I planned that I'm super proud of and would like to talk about but rest of the time felt like a waste.
