Help me I am clueless!

Hi guys and gals, names Wil. I am junior at IUPUI and I am clueless. Basicly so far I am almost done with all pre-dental classes (retaking orgo lecture and biochem next sem). Now when do I need to apply? when do I take my Dat? I guess I would preffer to get in next year (btw when excatly do ppl get in?). My councelors really suck (clueless just like me) so any help will help. I have been volunteering for 2 dental offices so I can get letter of recomman from there. I guess I need to get friendly with 2 science proffs quick for thier letters (does math count?).
Ohh and are there any guides you would reccomend that list dental schools and ranking and such, cause Baron's is horrible outdated and that "Ultimate Dnetal Admissions Guide" that floats on the web sounds fishy.
Plus hows the Kaplan course for DAT? worth the money?

ANd last question, what are some of teh safety/backup schools that you guys consider. I got a a list of schools that i really want to get in, but most of those I think are highly competative (and I might not be 🙁 ).

plus if got something else that you think might help, i would defently like to hear it 🙂

I can help you out one question; Kaplan helped me alot. You can start of with with buying the cheap review books and taking the tests. topscore is a CD with 3 or 4 old tests in it. Personally, i was only scoring 15's until i took the kaplan course. I ended up scoring 21 overall. I recommend Kaplan.
The important part is taking a bunch of test and getting your hands on the Kaplan book. if you can get the book then you don't really need to pay 700$ for the course.
