I just finished my second DAT, i fell awful becuase the scores were awful. I dont know what to do, I have already applied to schools and they are all waiting for the DAT scores. I know I dont have a chance, and i can take the dat again for the THIRD TIME in Late November but i feel thats too late. My first DAT scores are not to great, I Know schools look at the most recent DAT scores. My gpa is a 3.8, i have done research and some volunteer work, i just feel like crying!!!!! Though i am to ashamed of my scores, i need to post them for advice. Here are the scores for both DATs

best advice would be to apply next cycle. Take the rest of the year off for the DAT and start studying in the spring. Relax, you will be fine...I had 17AA and finished with a 20AA my 2nd time around I know u can do it. Good luck.

sorry about your DAT. Just give yourself a break and apply for the next cycle. The schools will see the 4 most recent scores. So you may need to change your studying strategy or use new reading materials to improve your scores, and when you do, they will see that you have improved. Don't give up, you will be fine:luck:

BTW...Which study materials did you use ?

Your scores for biology, chem, and ochem are above average =). Looks like you are having trouble with QR, PAT, and RC. Can you describe what factors of those sections you are having difficulty with so we could help better assess your situation and give you better feedback i.e. are you having trouble with time, understanding the material, etc... Hope is not lost, so you do not have to quit!

Well. How long did you study? What books did you use? Please be exact.

Sorry about your DAT; but, your some of DAT scores are improved, except for bio and RC.
If you already applied then do not quit. Because lots of dental school also look into your personal situations( the difficulties)--fators that school will consider. Many students are only focus on academic and that many of them lack other fulfillment.
expecting that you will receive lots of rejections and hope one school will see your potentiality of you that will accept you as their student.
However, it is all your decision to make. or try again next. it does not matter whether you will get in this year or next year. you will eventually get into dental school. it is only matter when.

Cheer up!

I understand how you feel, but don't give up. I too received poor scores on my first test and plan to take the DAT again in a couple of months. Like you, I was so upset. Dentistry is a passion for me as I have been in the dental field for 15 as a hygienist and decided to return to school two years ago. The people on this site are so helpful and supportive so stick with your friends here. Let us know what you had trouble with, the feedback will help. I had trouble with time. I was so stressed out and unrested prior to the test and I didn't spend enough time on test taking technique. So knowing where your weakness is will help you prepare again. I found these two quotes while doing some research and I printed them out and posted them at my desk where I study. I don't remember where I got them but they are inspirational.
"If you have the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed"!
"Trials keep you strong, Sorrows keep you human, Failure keeps you humble, Success keeps you glowing, But only God keeps you going"! Good Luck.

I know how bad it can feel to work hard at something only to get poor results. But its not how you did on that test but how you will react to it that matters the most. If you let this test affect your attitude towards getting into dental school well guess what? You already have lost to the test. Don't be discouraged. It is only a matter of time until you get in. NOthing and i mean nothing goes according to plan, and this is just a little bump in the road to becoming a dentist. Years from now when u are a dentist you will look back and either laugh at the situation or you will be like wow i am proud of myself for getting through it, but either way this is good for you. Use it as motivation to study your butt off for the next test. As for my advice, I would recommend you don't try to force the test this November. I would suggest applying next year if possible so you have more time to prepare for the test. What i have used is the KAPLAN course which has classes and online content you can use, it helped me just you have to stick with it. Don't worry and if makes you feel any better, I got pretty good scores on my DAT but due to unexpected circumstances I was not able to apply to dental school and now my scores are going to waste. However I will take the test again probably around march or april. So keep your head up and keep moving forward.

I would suggest a solid 6 months of studying and a retake. Go through the study materials over and over again. Get crack the PAT and do not take the DAT unless you are consistently scoring 21 or better. Get achiever and top score when you think you are finished studying and make surer that you can get at least a 20. If you are scoring solidly on all practice tests then you are ready to take the exam. Dont take it again though until you score well on practice. You can do it just hang in there.

Thanks for the link Doc,
I guess what I meant was that for people who want to retake the DAT, the D-schools will see the scores of their last 4 attempts. (I was told by ADA people when I called them). So If someone takes the DAT this year and has to retake it at any time, and apply for any cycle, the D-schools still will recieve all the DAT scores for that person. This info will be provided to D-schools by ADA, I was told.

Quiting is never an option and it should not be in this case either. I get your test scores are not the ones you wanted but instead of getting down on yourself pick yourself up, brush yourself off and don't take this lying down.

Pros: You had improvement on most of the areas. That shows well.
Cons: You dropped in a couple of areas. That does not show well.

Advice: First. Keep you chin up. Go through the subjects that you performed well on and consistently review. Second. Focus on the subject areas that you did not do well on or that you dropped scores in. Finally, and this is important "Only you can change your life. No one can do it for you."

If dentistry is truly what you want then you will find a way to make it happen.

Learn it. Live it. Love it.
