Hey all-

MSIII, Set on EM, can't see myself doing anything else.

Stats:
IMG - American citizenship, big 4 caribbean school with strong EM match list
Step 1- 242
Research- Clinical experience, nothing published :scared:
Clinicals- All A's (=high pass), no A+'s (Honors) yet, but great feedback from residents and attendings.
Set up for 2 EM clerkships Aug-Oct at programs affiliated with school, but I've heard horror stories from the classes above me not getting interviews so this is not reassuring.

I love EM and I just want to match, anywhere. Please help me with any advice about chances so that I can re-evaluate what I need to do to be more competitive.

Thanks!

Do well on your EM rotations.
Apply broad and to a lot of places.
Apply at places that have taken graduates from your school in the past.
Have a reasonable back up plan.
Do well on step 2 CK and pass step 2 CS. I suggest signing up for CS ASAP because there are a limited amount of days/locations.

Agreed with above, but also wanted to add that your application needs to be in and complete on the first day. Your LOR should be in to your assigned places before the dean's letter goes out.

See if you can do rotations July and Aug. October may be a bit late since interviews tend to go out earlier now with the MSPE date change.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.... OMG THIS.

I was just like you. AMG, SGU, 248 step 1. I matched high on my list.

Apply broadly. Target the "IMG friendly" places. Suck it up and deal with it that you're not gonna get into Denver, Cinci, and all of California.

You can make it.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice guys. I'm really hoping to do well on the rest of the rotations and score >255 on step 2, which i will take in late july, but you can't predict these things.

As for the rotations, I do the August one at an IMG friendly place but I've heard they're trying to move away from IMGs. The next one is also IMG friendly, but finishes Oct. 11, too late for a SLOR. Is it even worth it there? I was thinking maybe if I made a great impression I would miss the SLOR but make an impression and move up ranks, is this faulty thinking?

I've heard the word about getting ERAS done and sent out the first day, and understand how essential it is. How much of a difference does this make for number of interviews?

My dream residency is in the Midwest. U. Iowa. Probably a long long shot but its my reach.

Thanks in advance all!

That's late but I wouldn't call it *too* late as long as you can work with the clerkship director and get the SLOR in quickly after the end of the clerkship.

As far as an audition rotation, you are absolutely right that rotating somewhere and making a great impression can move you up their ROL.
