...you're my only hope.

So I work in a clinical position that has me float around with different physicians, PA/NP, and today naturopaths. I have to call them Dr. So and So but have an issue with that.

Oh wise SDN, what do I do?

If it's part of the clinic's culture, just go with the flow with how they want to be addressed.

As a pre-med, your opinion regarding whether you think PA/NPs or naturopaths are physicians has no bearing in the clinic's SOP.

You should explain to them in detail why you think it's unreasonable to you to have to call them "doctor", preferably in front of one of their patients, but ideally in the middle of a procedure. Make sure you're standing over them and using your outdoor voice, and for kicks, you should wear a long white coat to clinic that day. Afterwards, relieve them of their stethoscope as they walk out in shame to the jeers of their former patients.

Or, you know, you could ignore it and move on with your life. Your call.

I like this advice. I think I will go with this one!

Look, you are not even a "regular fish" in the world of Shark Tale. As a lowly premed, you're even lower than whale poop on the food chain scale. You're Oscar. As much as I hate the naturopaths and their lies, I still gotta tell you to stay in yo lane.

You mean the same way you have to call dance theater PhD's "Dr."?

I got you, and I understand its a clinic, but you gotta chill bro. Focus on your own battles before caring about others. Maybe once you're a physician, then you have the knowledge and credentials to be a little more outspoken.

As of right now, he ain't in your clinic, you're in his.

Except dance theater PhDs aren’t typically asking to be called Dr outside accademic or social circles.
However I do agree with you...if state law and the practices normal operations permit naturopaths to call themselves Dr to patients then the OP needs to go with it. It’s less about being right and more about being professional and employed

Obviously there is no way around it, but I think it is real stupid that you are expected to call PAs "Dr." They are usually great at what they do and secure in their station in the hierarchy. I feel the same way about having to call NPs "Dr." as well (even "DNPs") but that territory is well tread-upon already.

What is a naturopath doing in a real clinic?

I didn't know you could do this.

I need to re-evaluate my life.

Well, they are technically doctors. A doctor does not mean a person who has a MD or DO. It is misleading but even a person with a phd in something like blowing bubbles is effectively a doctor.

It's all about context. In our hospital it is strictly against policy to call anyone who is not a physician, "Doctor." It has the effect of misleading the public.
Outside the hospital I'll call anyone with a doctorate, doctor.

To paraphrase Dr. Cox, a naturopath is a doctor like Dr. Pepper is a doctor.

I think in most states you have the legal right to slap and/or punch any PA, NP, or naturopath that calls himself/herself "doctor" 😛
