Hi Guyz,

I am done with sticking it thru. Everyday I stay in clinical medicine I become more miserable. It is a done deal; I want to get out ASAP.

What are realistic JOB options for me? I dont want to go thru any additional schooling at this point.

A little about myself. I finished an ACGME residency training program and also completed a non ACGME fellowship.

Some of my good qualities:

1) Fascinated by science

2) Tend to be creative

3) I seem to dig technological stuff

4) Good work ethic

Some of my bad qualities:

1) I hate to be bossed around too much

2) I like to do things at my own pace

3) I hate competitive working environments

My ideal salary range would be 50-60K, but I am willing to go up or down a little bit.

Please help me out. I would appreciate any kind of networking with people you might know

I am REALLY SERIOUS about this so I just want people to know that I am not here to waste anybody's time.

What residency and what fellowship?

hate to break it to you, but these two qualities suggest that you will never be happy in any employee role and thus you really don't want a "job". You need to be self employed. That's going to take hard work, usually some money, and is going to take a lot longer than 90 days to get established. You haven't really told us what your interests are, just that you want to get out of clinical medicine, so it would be silly for us to throw out ideas like "open up a golf pro shop", "start a deli" etc. It's your life, you bear responsibility for at least focusing the discussion by telling us what you can picture yourself doing. The "anything is better than this" notion us simply another version of the grass is always greener -- it Frequently isn't.

Try something like EPIC , EMR this business is growing and they make good money even at entry level. Good luck in your future search. I hope this work for you

If you are a resident take a "leave of absence" for personal reasons and take a step back. I felt the same, I was so burned out I think I couldnt even think clearly. Made it to my vacation and had a little break which provided some clarity. The reality for me is the same. Im not sure that if I could go back again I would have become a doctor. It is really contrary to my personality. But I owe over a third of a million dollars, and have no other marketable skills besides my MD.

The options as I see them are; leave medicine altogether and try and obtain a whole other career. but after researching this it appears that doctors make way more than nearly any other profession, and have so much more flexibility. Also it would be difficult to see myself going from being the Head honcho (doctor) to employee especially for the rest of my life.

Option two ; continue to practice medicine---sort of.... If I dont see myself becoming a full time hospitalist I could pick up locum tenens shifts and work as much as I want. there is no shortage of those positions. I could work for a walk in clinic (either full time, part time or again locum tenens). If I dont want to be a clinician I could open an ambulatory clinic, or a primary care walk in clinic or a urgent care center. Work at those until it gets off its feet ,and then hire employees and just be a business owner.

In the end after much contemplation, I concur. Medicine sucks but so does everything else with the exception of being a rock star, movie actor, or trust fund baby. I could make 50-60 K working hardly at all in medicine or I could make 50-60 working full time in another career. Working sucks either way.

What you want is definitely reasonable. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Agree with the above poster - look into informatics. The field is growing rapidly, and clinical folks with technical skills are in high demand. You will work reasonable hours, have weekends off, and likely make 2-4 times your listed salary range. Your creativity could be put to use in thinking of software solutions to everyday problems on the floors or in clinic. Look at the American Medical Informatics Association for more information.

hey sivastraba
i replied back to your PM. Good luck. i second that healthcare technology/IT/EHR industry is looking.

the biggest obstacle i have found for myself when i decided to quit clinical medicine is humbleness. know a few people who hates it just as much as i do, but refuse to give it up because of the "MD" pride.
it is definitely still hard, but accepting the humbleness of giving up your MD, is the only way to get out of clinical medicine. however at the same time, it is because of my MD that landed me a job as a clinical consultant.

best of luck to you.

This is for the OP. I just encountered Epic consulting gig, they are hiring in several markets, with rates b/in 80-130/hr. I can send the listing via PM.

EMR trainer/implementation consultant usually required a person to be certified in that EHR, whether it be epic, allscripts, GE, etc.
with a few yrs of experience, i have seen trainer on the acute inpatient side getting paid >$100/hr usually m-f 8-5pm, some weekends.
it is a nice gig if you have the certification and experience.

Some of my good qualities:
1) Fascinated by science
2) Tend to be creative
3) I seem to dig technological stuff
4) Good work ethic

May I recommend a career in Animal Husbandry. It fits with pretty much everything on your list.

OP: Career as a primary investigator in a research topic that you find fascinating.

Bad qualities 1 and 2 rule out anything high level with EMR (eg: implementation consultants). The low level stuff (eg: how to use Epic) doesn't pay half that.
