Help Me Understand Pharmacy

Hey guys, I'm currently an undecided freshman attending a school that does not have a school of pharmacy. However, I know now that pharmacy is what I want, and need to transfer and eventually work my way into a professional program. Heres my question though, do I need to find a school with a pre-pharmacy major, or can I go to any school and major in something like biology or chemistry and then once I finish the prerequisites for a specifc professional program apply there? Is one way better than another? I really want to get rolling with applications, so if anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

This is what you should do:

Since you are a few steps ahead in that you are only a freshman but know that Pharmacy is what you want, finish out this semester at your current school. Meanwhile, look into Pharmacy Schools that guarantee admission to individuals that start taking pre-reqs in their own school (0+6 schools). You have to generally maintain a certain GPA at these schools, but you would not be in competition with transfer students applying to Pharmacy School two years from now. This way, you will not lose sleep at night hoping for some school to take you.

You can continue in your current school, but why do it if you have to cross more hurdles later?

You have to generally maintain a certain GPA at these schools, but you would not be in competition with transfer students applying to Pharmacy School two years from now.

I think TB's advice is pretty good, but you should know that not all schools that are 0+6 have programs like this, and some 4 year schools do. For example, St. Louis College of Pharmacy ONLY accepts students for their 0+6 program straight out of high school - they told me that if you've taken even a few college courses, you have to apply as a transfer student (into the 3rd year of the program).

Creighton University (and I'm sure others) has a guaranteed interview process for undergrads who complete all of their pre-reqs at Creighton (while maintaining minimum standards). They also don't have to take the PCAT. However, that's just a guaranteed interview, not acceptance.
