Ok ill lay out the ground basics so far my GPA is a 2.2 with a shy of 36 hours ... meaning I'm a sophomore in college with my first semester . I took this semester phys1 chem1 stats and humanities. phys1-C chem1-B Stat- C Humanities-C nothing is set in stone... I'm doing everything i can to get the C's to B's and the B's to A's but i don't think i will be able to. i want to know if i can still make it into med school if i pick my GPA back up? i want to know if i can get above 3.3 to 3.5 at least what do i need to do ? i know its going to be hard but so is med school so what can i do? is it even possible to make that comeback? i also want to know that if i get somewhere between a 3.0 to a 3.3 (ill try harder that that) but for argument sakes lets say that's where i end up what should i do to boost my application. i want the complete honesty from everyone. I'm not saying i am giving up, just saying that I'm putting my mind into my academic performance now and am willing to push myself even further if necessary. i ask for guidance. i ask for what it is I'm up against? will this be harder? which i wont be surprised if it is lol but any help that can point me in the right direction would be much appreciated. my major is biology.

What is keeping you from getting A's and B's? Family issues? Focus? Medical? Partying/Socializing? Relationship issues? Are you working hard, but just don't perform well?

You need to address the reasons that are preventing you from getting good grades.

If you work hard enough, spend more time with your head in the books, maybe meet with tutors, meet with your professors to discuss concepts you don't understand, and then you should be able to get A's. Undergrads rarely use the resources they have available to them - tutors, professors, etc... are there to help you succeed. YOU need to be the one who initiates the process.

You need to get that 2.2 up to a 3.4ish by re-taking those C's and performing well on any future courses. Try for A's. A strong upward trend looks good.

Thank you so much for responding to me ... Ya your right ... To be honest yes its focus I suppose ... To be real I guess I haven't really put my full mind to books ... Yes I may also be to distracted with my girlfriend ... You want the truth I've been always dissapointed with results cause when I actually try to study... I take the test ...blank out... And do poor ... That doesn't implicate I'm mentally ******ed I just need to find a way... I guess a guide ... So maybe the solution to my demise is I try harder for a prolonged period of time... Study 2 to 3 days with the utilizations of my resources in advance and prepare better ... I apologize ... I'm still a kid trying to obtain the neccisary study habits to take on medschool and preform well in the academic criteria ... I respect those who have to change their habits because it isn't easy AT ALL... Is there anything else I can do?... Should I look for research?... Shadowing... Volunteer work... I'm gonna be working in an ambulance service very soon as an EMT ... But what else should I be doing ?... What is going to guarantee my success and the big question is... Do I still have a chance to turn this around?

If you want to do medicine, then you need to start focusing NOW! Research, shadowing, volunteer work is all important, but not as important as your GPA & MCAT.. Yes, you have a chance, but you need to get focused.

As someone who was in a very similar situation, I would say you have one job and only one job to focus on right now and that it your grades. Forget working as an EMT, forget shadowing, forget research, forget volunteer work. None of them will matter squat if you do not have the grades, and let me tell you getting out of the hole you are in later on is very difficulty.

Think about your situation. If your problem is focus try to speak with someone about strategies to help you. What worked for me was to find a special place in the library and listen to a thunder storm. The reason was that it broke the silence and drowned out the distractions without itself being a distraction. Go to tutoring, office hours, etc. But right now, you need to hunker down and fix the grades. You can volunteer and do that other stuff later on.

Harsh comment in 3... 2... 1...

Re-evaluate your goals and mature up. If you truly want to get into medical school, you would know its demands and be able to accommodate to them.
Even if you 4.0 the rest of your college career, you'll likely only end up with 3.7'ish GPA. Which is do-able. But difficult.
Surround yourself with "smart" pre-med students who actually know what they're doing. Positive vibes will do you well.
Get involved and do something you like, which doesn't have to be medically related. This includes intramural sports, clubs, etc.
Get comfortable meeting new people, extend your networking, and learn to be able to commit yourself to something.
Sacrifice time for studying. For instance, I went to a big party school and decided to stay in for Halloweekend to study. I could've gone out, got schwasted, met babes, and all that good stuff. But a friend and I decided to stay in and study for our orgo exam. (This reflects the importance of surrounding yourself with smart, motivated people).

Anyways. I mean all the best. You can do it, ya just gotta make some major changes! Good luck yo!

After my first two semesters I had somewhere around a 1.5 GPA, if I remember right. After many years I'm now sitting on a 3.4. I haven't gotten less than a B, since those first two semesters. It has been pretty miserable knowing that I can't afford anything lower than an A or A-. Especially when you hit some really challenging classes (like O Chem was for me). On flip side if you really want to do this, you have to make an internal decision to let nothing stop you. To answer your question, YES you can still do it! However, many people in your situation give up and don't do it. So my advice to you is to ask yourself if you want this bad enough, because its going to suck and you will have to put everything you got into it.

False, you are still a kid trying to adjust from high school to college. Everybody goes through some sort of adjustment like this so you aren't the first and you definitely aren't the last. I concur with the above, surround yourself with good studiers with high goals, it rubs off.

Haha sorry I was going for dramatic effect. I was essentially saying that you aren't trying to figure out med school but how to figure out undergrad. Sorry for the confusion. Remember, DO grade replacement is the 8th wonder of the world. Goodluck

I totally get it, except high school over prepared me for college. I was so bored my first 2 years of college, since I found my high school IB program to be exceptionally harder than my classwork in college.

It's hard to focus and study, but you have to think about your end goal. You aren't going to get into any MD or DO school with a 2.2 gpa. If I knew I wanted to go to medicine during undergrad, I would of had A's in 90% of my classes, because that's how competitive it is; however, back then I just thought I'd go on to a masters or something, and didn't really need anything competitive. BUT YOU KNOW - so take this opportunity to do WELL, so that you don't have to spend as much time after you graduate trying to repair the damage you did during undergrad, because you were young and not focused!

Best of luck to you.
