good list!

reaches: columbia, duke, NYU, sinai
low yield: rutgers (takes few if any OOS), brown (small class size and prefers their own grads/non trads), GW/GTown, tufts

That's a lot of schools, you could cut it down. I agree with Vain brother, but I'd keep tufts and remove BU instead (their stats are higher than yours).

haha it's definitely too many schools, and the reason it's pretty top-heavy was my high interest in MD/MPH programs. i'll have to think about tufts v. BU!

By all means, keep any and all reaches you want, as long as you have a solid realistic list as a foundation (which you do). It is simply up to you how many schools you want to have with regards to your time and money. Apply to at least 20.

I'm ordinarily not a fan of "reaches", but this is what caught my eye:
multiple honors and research grants, 1st author pub, research/fieldwork abroad,

At least add Rochester and BU

Your latest list is pretty great as is.

If you're looking for more: Rochester (you're in NY, why not?), BU, Tufts.

Some reaches: Pitt (love research), Case (love research), Emory, NYU.

thank you!
i've submitted my app to most of the schools on my list, just figuring out how to strategically choose some reaches (is there even a strategy to it?) you mentioned, for example, Pitt and Case love research, but i didn't know that! i guess i'll have to do some digging around on SDN to find out more about what top tier schools favor in an applicant with a below median MCAT and sGPA. there's gotta be some method to choosing "smart" reaches? time to do more research

After seeing hundreds of applications with "research internships" "poster presentations" "co-author of a low impact paper" seeing an applicant with who writes research grants and has 1st author publications is definitely an attention grabber to an ADCOM.

33 MCAT with a balanced score of 11 each way can keep you in the running for schools where your MCAT is 2 points or so lower their average given your accomplishments. You got the green light to apply to Harvard/Johns Hopkins......Goro doesn't give that out very freely so give it your best shot and don't look back.

Being a New York resident provides you alot of state school options and probably a bit more leeway with applying to some reaches.

The lists from above have about 20 schools----if you want some more reaches here are some options that could be worth an application
Case Western, Pitt, Duke, Michigan, Cornell, Mt Sinai. I would add Rochester and Boston U even if you keep Harvard; those two are worth an application.

I'd say put both Pitt and Case in there. Plus Pitt's 10%ile MCAT is like 30, so you fall within it.
