These questions are from the Barron's book. I know there's many errors, but I just want to confirm the answers. I'm not sure about the plan of attack of these problems and can use some help. These problems would be great practice, especially since we've been hearing so many horror stories about the richness of word problems on the qr section.

Barron's Model Exam A

15) A fly sits at the edge of a 12-inch-diameter phonograph record that is playing at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute. Approximately how fast, in feet per minute, is the fly moving?

C) 50
D) 100
E) 396

Ans: D

36) The value of sin (II/3) equals the value of

A) sin (2II/3)
B) sin (-II/3)
C) sin (-5/6)
D) sin (5II/6)
E) sin (-2II/3)

Ans: A

37) David weighs 1 1/4 times what Mark weighs and twice what Susan weighs. If Mark weighs 176 pounds, how much does Susan weigh?

A) 110 lb
B) 70 lb

A) $100
B) $72
C) $108
D) $144
E) $80

Ans: E

18) The five tires that came with Steve's new car were rotated frequently so that each tire was used exactly the same amount of time as the others. The tires were replaced when the odometer read 24,000 miles. For how many miles had each been used?

A) 30,000 miles
B) 24,000 miles
C) 18,000 miles
D) 20,000 miles
E) 19,200 miles

C) $20,000
D) $18,000

A) 30
B) 42
C) 50
D) 60
E) 65

Ans: C

40) If snow is falling to the ground at a rate of 1 inch every half hour and is melting at the rate of 0.75 inch every hour, how many inches deep should the snow be after 8 hours of snowfall?

A) 10
B) 22
C) 12
D) 4
E) 2

Ans: A

ADA Sample Practice test

24) When each of the sides of a square is increased by 1 yard, the area of the new square is 53 square yards more than that of the original square. What is the length of the sides of the orignal square?

A) 25
B) 26
C) 27
D) 52
E) 54

Ans: B

Thanks so much, & good luck studying 🙂

15) d = 12 "inch" - 1ft
circum = d x pi = 1 x pi (3.14)
circum = 1revolution
circum x 33.3 revolutions = 3.14 x 33.3 = 104 --> approx 100

36)
sin (II/3) = sin (2II/3)

1st quadrant - sin/cos/tan all pos
2nd quadrant - sin positive -- cos/tan neg
3rd - tan positive -- sin/cos neg
4th cos positive -- sin/tan neg

"All Student Take Caluclus" going from quadrant I -> IV

18)
24,000miles total driven on 4 tires
24,000 x 4 = 96,000miles

96,000 miles driven on 5 tires equally
96,000 / 5 = 19,2000miles

32)
river flows 3mph, man rows 5mph
difference 2mp hour!
so if he rowed for an hour he would go upstream 2miles
but he only needs to go up one so 30min
river flows 3mph so 1mile per 20min
30min + 20min = 50min

40)
snow falls 1inch every half hour
so -> 2inch every one hour
snow melts .75inch every hour
so gain for one hour is 1.25inches
multiply by 8hrs
1.25 x 8 = 10hrs

ADA 24)
original square side = x
original square area = (x)(x) = x^2

new square side = x+1
new square area = (x+1)(x+1) = x^2 + 2x +1
which also equals 53yds more than the orginal square area
= x^2 + 53

set the two equal to each other
x^2 + 53 = x^2 + 2x +1

x^2 cancel out, substract 1 from each side, divide by 2 and you get x = 26

sorry for the individual post for each question...hope the explanations clarify things..good luck

38) I had to work this one out by trial and error first to get the answer, then I made an equation that easily could have been used to start with...

(.25)x + 2x = 180

x=Brett's amount of money

Alright someone figure out #19...If 100 of the 1000 dentists are women, then it would seem to me that only 900 can be male. I do not see how they get 960.

would be helpful if you typed up the problems..as all of us don't have the barrons book..thanks

u read the question wrong

1000 dentists are from west coast
40 female dentists are from west coast
so there's 960 male west coast dentists

for these type of questions,
you really don't need us to help you confirming if the barron's answer is correct.
u can simply plug the number (18000) back into the question and u can see that it is indeed correct

for me to approach this question
i wouldn't even bother calculating...
because there's should be at least 20 percent difference between 21780 and the answer, choice B, C, E can be eliminated instantly
that's left with 19000 and 18000, and simple calculation (19000 + 20% of itself) exceeds 21780, 18000 is the answer.

u could calculate the answer by (21780 / 1.10) / 1.10
but it takes too long
speed is everything

HA! you are right, it took me a good 5 minutes staring at that question to figure out what it was saying. not good news for me...

Yeh only 18k or 19k could work but looking at 19k when you add 10% that's already nearly 21k and when you go and add another 10% you KNOW that's over.

It's easy to confirm 18k.

10% of 18k is 1800. So you have 19800.
10% of 19800 is 1980. Add them and get 21780.
