Hello all,

Please be kind to this lost soul. I just graduated from Tulane with a 2.8 in Cell and Molecular Biology. Up until this point, I thought I wanted to do medicine, but now I'm not sure. My advisor recommended optometry school, but I don't know where to begin. I applied for a master's program at Tulane in Neuroscience, so I hope to raise my GPA. I read posts about the OAT and applying. What is the deadline for this year's application? Any other advice you'd like to give? Thank you so much.

It's too late to apply for the current cycle. The new application cycle will be starting in mid July, I would recommend you to start studying OAT now and take it during the summer, so you will be able to submit your application early in the cycle to boost your chance.

Well, really not too much to say here. 2.8 GPA is very low. You need to raise that up. A strong OAT score will help a ton. Too late to apply this cycle. Take the OAT during the summer and then apply early for the next cycle (usually starts around August).

What you should do is have yourself an eye exam and maybe spend a day or two in an optometrists office finding out what an optometrist is and does before you start asking about the OAT.

This is what I was going to say.. don't apply for this year's cycle. You need to spend some time in an optometrist's office getting experience and learning whether or not this is really something you want to do. If you're just now learning about optometry school, it's entirely too early to go ahead and apply. Learn some more about the profession, ask some questions and raise your GPA first and foremost - then decide if it's right for you.

Hey always! I'm from Louisiana too! I just went through all the applying and am on the waitlists at PCO, SCO, and PUCO. Also like you opto wasn't my initial goal bc I started college with an open mind and wanted to pursue things I was interested in and let the career pick me, so to speak. I have a bunch of useful advice/tips/suggestions about optimetry, applying, strengthening your app, and picking a career using the gpa you have, and applying as an LA resident. Please feel free to message me if you'd like!

👍 Optometry should not be your second option 🙁 Definitely shadow and talk to Optometrists before jumping into the whole application mess. Because who knows, you may not even like it and you may very well have ended up wasting time :\
