sup everyone

i'm currently a Caribbean med student. won't say the name of the school, but its not a big 4. our school had to take an nbme in order to be sponsored to take step. the first one i took was last year august and it came out to 36. second attempt in december of last year was a 42. the most recent attempt was in march and that came out to a 52. passing grade is 70. 70 questions that is

my next attempt is the 28th of this month. i've done the kaplan live course (required by school) and i personally felt burnt out. i did dit 2012, which got me the 52. my uworld percentage is somewhere in the 40% range currently. finished uworld during basic sciences so this is basically my second go around. have 1000 questions left. also did pathoma in basic sciences

i know that there isnt really much i can do till the 28th in terms of studying. but i guess i just wanted to know what i should do after this exam is done. honestly, i don't really think im gonna hit the 70 mark on this one. any suggestions on what i should do? whether it be from here till the 28th of may or the 28th elsewhere. its gonna be damn near a year and im still not sponsored to take step.

Nothing personal, but I don't think people are responding because we (at least I) don't have a freaking clue what those double digit numbers even mean. Are they percentages? Raw number correct? Are you taking a CBSSA (like NBME 6, 7, 11, 12, etc.) or something your school puts together? There are too many ambiguous factors here for me to even get started.

Not to leave you without, at this point you are dangerously close to the test. Stick to subjects where you can grab easy points (pharm, bioc, embryo, micro).

so you only need 70/200 questions correct to be sponsored by your school????

No, it's a two-digit score which then gets converted into your projected Step score. I think what he's talking about is the CBSE. Our "passing" was around a 70, too. It's basically a qualifying exam to take the real Step.

Sorry, man. I don't think we can really help you much. It seems like you've already tackled a lot of the big resources (UW, First Aid, Pathoma). If you have trouble learning the stuff, I suggest trying more and more to make connections and actually understand the material rather than memorizing, but it seems like your test is coming up pretty soon so maybe that's not the best advice. Anyway, study hard and good luck.

Gotcha, my school didn't do the CBSE. Jawadh91, grab those "forgettable" points and think about (and correct) what went wrong last time and hopefully you'll come back with some good news!

thanks alot guys. i'll update whenever i get the grade back, circa early june.
ill prolly end up reading over micro and pharm. i know i can go through the body systems in first aid in 2 days, so that's what ill be doing the last 2 days before the exam. currently getting resp down, considering i scored the lowest in that

thanks again guys

Have you tried to figure out what's going wrong on your exams? When you read the questions are you recognizing the material but misremembering? I'm a little confused as to how short you're falling from what is expected of you.
How are other students doing at your school?

Sometimes i blank out even though the material is there in my head. Other times im kinda like wtf are these ppl asking

Tbh, I think its just getting to that second order for answering the questions. That and also the fact that I feel defeated at this point.

Preping for the CBSE is possible by just learning FA. Before you take boards I would suggest doing pathoma and some of the Kaplan video lectures to develop more understanding of the concepts. Goljan audio wouldn't hurt either and that could be done before the test on the 28th. Good luck!

Alright. I'm guessing one of two things is happening given the facts you've presented. Either 1. You've started this school without the proper background and preparation for medical studies. or 2. You've not been keeping up with your studies during the school year and you are now trying to push way too much information into your head in way too little time. Would you say one of these things is true? Otherwise option 3 is really unpleasant.

well with option 1, i went to the Caribbean right after high school, so i did premed there too. i don't necessarily think option 2 is the case, considering that since basic sciences ive learned, not memorized, the md material via brs, kaplan, etc. its also been like 8 months since basic sciences was done, so don't really know how i can be pushing in alot info in such a long period of time

You learned your basic sciences from BRS and Kaplan? Please tell me that's not what you just said. Anyway, there is the fourth possibility that you're just burned out and you need a couple days to just go swimming, try to do some mad flirting and don't touch your books. Then come back and laser scan concepts and details into your brain - if you sometimes can do that. Does your brain sometimes do that when you're feeling really good and fresh?:luck:
