I was just classified as a non-resident for UCLA and so I have to pay non-resident tuition! I've been going to school in CA for 3 years! They said I haven't established "intent to become a CA resident." I just was too lazy to go register to vote, change my license and bank accounts to CA. My parents are Nevada residents but they stopped claiming me as a dependent. They said I could appeal this non-resident classification, so does anyone have any advice or is anyone in the same situation? Thanks

I guess that you did not file your tax in ca as well. I remember when I just came to CA, I had to show all my PG&E bills and proof of payment from other college to prove that I have actually lived in CA for one year. But I did have a CA driver license though. I'm sure that the law to be a CA resident is not that hard. You just have to bring all of the proof in black and white to UCLA to appeal then.
Best of luck

hazel,

unfortunately, simply being a student of the state is insufficient evidence of your intent to establish residency in that particular state. specifically for california, they do ask that you remain in the state for over a year (which you have as a student), register to vote, establish california bank accounts, obtain a state driver's license (including registration of car) and paying resident state tax (including money earned from other states). perhaps you should try to get all the following done as soon as possible and maybe reclassify for next year?

also, if you do a google search on the matter, there are specific information on how to re-classify as a state resident in california. good luck!

Hmm not sure what the laws are in california, but I was once thinking of switching my residency to another state (virginia) when I went to grad school. However, I was told that being a student was not sufficient enough to qualify you as a resident. You had to actually be working for a few years in order to declare yourself a resident.
By the way, what are you doing in stockton? do you go to UOP? Just wondering...i went there for undergrad...

yes I go to school at UOP =). I love UOP =) anyway, Everyone, thanks for the info and I'll try to get all that stuff done as soon as possible. okay thanks =) bye
