I'm a physician and all my knowledge about taking the MCAT and applying to medical school stops at 1982. I'm asking for anecdotal information to help me understand my sons situation. He just graduated college and starts a SMP at PCOM in Atlanta next month. He scored 485 on the MCAT but he didn't have time to prepare for it, taking organic chemistry and physics during the same year and was swamped with those courses. I don't know anything about the SMP's as they weren't around when I was applying to medical schools. My understanding is the SMP is a mechanism for the medical school to take a closer look at your abilities to be successful at their school if you scored low on the MCAT or college GPA. I believe if he keeps at least a 3.0 he's guaranteed an interview there. I also believe he will take most of the same courses as the 1st year medical students and if accepted there, won't have to retake them. I know of one student I helped get into a SMP and he blew it away and is about to graduate medical school. I would like to hear about anyones experience at an SMP. One question; if you are enrolled in an SMP at one school are you pretty much stuck at getting into that medical school? Thanks in advance.

Is it PCOM-GA? That’s where I’ll be attending this year and I can help answer any program specific questions for the SMP based off of my knowledge

No, he would not be stuck at that school. If he does really well he can use that achievement to get into other medical schools.
