hey everyone. first of all congrats to everyone who received their acceptance this cycle and good luck to those who are applying soon...

i'm gonna be applying out to dental school this summer and i was wondering if you could kind of give me some advice or help. i'm gonna be applying with an overall gpa between a 3.3 and a 3.4 and a science gpa of about a 3.2. i'm currently studying for the DATs and i'm hoping to take them sometime in may or so. i know my gpa is on the lower end but do you think i have a legitimate chance to get in if i get, say for example, a 20 on the DAT? thanks in advance.

i live in south jersey so i plan to apply to...umdnj, temple, tufts, bu, nyu, vcu, and a few others along the east coast. also in addition, are there any other schools that any of you think i would have a good chance of getting into given my stats?

get that dat score. and min of 18 in Rc. You will be fine. Apply Really REALLY EALRy to many schools at-least 10+. YOUR GPA IS FINE you cant do much now anyways other than improve science gpa by taking couple science classes and getting A's in them. If you do get a 20 on dat there will be a lot of doors open for you with your gpa so study hard. Gl

But i am more worried about your school choices. You need to apply to more schools and strategically. When the new ADEA office guide to dental school book comes out buy it. You can decide what other schools you should apply to..

thanks a lot pb123. any suggestions as to which schools?

The first post in this thread (its the first sticky on here) will show a list of all the out-of-state friendly schools that MOST of us should be aiming at.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=635046

3.3 overall with 3.2 science and say... 20 DAT are "decent" numbers. I would aim at 15-20 schools from that list.

I graduated with a 3.4 cgpa and 3.2 sgpa with my dat scores being 19/19/22.

I applied to 14 school, received 3 interviews, got accepted at 1 and removed my name from the waitlists from the other 2.

1. It is VERY important to do well on the DAT. If you get a 20+, you'll be golden. Anything under... it's pretty much a crapshoot.

2. Make sure you apply EARLY. This is so very important for people that are in our situation.

3. Make sure you stick out in your application and in person. Your leadership and community service aspects of your application should be very strong. Like me, you don't have a 3.8... so you need to sell yourself to them.

4. Apply to many schools if you can afford it. I would aim for 12-14 that are friendly to applicants with your stats.

5. Last but not least, be very patient. This can be a very long and frustrating process.

Be proud of your gpa and study hard. Good luck!

When I applied my GPA was a 3.4 and my science was a 3.23 with my BCP being a 3.24. I got 18/18/21 on the DAT and have received 2 interviews (one is a state school) and one acceptance, my other interview is in feb.

I had a lot of volunteer/EC experience so I think that will definitely help you if you have that. Be yourself on your interview day and know how to eloquently get your point across about why you want to be a dentist.

Follow the advice of others and apply broadly (and to those that coincide with your gpa/dat scores-- get the ADEA book- I found it very helpful!). I applied to 7 schools due to cost reasons, but about a week or two into it I was wishing I could have applied to more.

Good Luck 🙂

-Okay, 3.3 to 3.4 should be fine. It's just a bit low considering your science gpa is only 3.2. Aim for a high DAT (21 or above should take away your GPA problem). Study hard and take it ONCE (better impression i believe) and score real high). Good school to apply to with your GPA: NYU, Temple, BU. and a bunch of other schools. Just remember there's no such thing as an easy dental school to get in. It's about your grades as well as your personal skill(your interview) and a bit of luck. So therefore good luck 😀. I applied to 8 schools, 2 interviews, 1 acceptance as of right now. GPA 3.6 science GPA 3.7 AA 19, science 22, PA17 🙁 I hated my PA score. I think it affected my chance of getting more interviews.
-"write a striking personal statement". I can't emphasize this enough to people. You need to be able to slap the dental admission people in the face the 1st minute they laid eyes on your statement. They review thousands of people with really similar statistics (gpas, dat, etcc) so you got to make an impression. The way i attack mine is i picked something that i do in life as a hobby and use the philosophies i learned from that activity to write about how that can help me in dental school and profession. I was a bit strange and maybe corny on my statement but hey if it works it works.
-One thing to separate yourself from all other applicants: go do some research and get publish. That's a big big big bonus.

awesome. you all have been a great help.

for the past couple years, i have been doing medicinal chem research with my o-chem professor and i believe i will be published soon. i'm glad that will be helpful.

Right now the DAT is your biggest adversary. I had a 3.46 cGPA and 3.26 sGPA with a 22AA/23TS/23PA on the DAT (which I took on September 1st). I applied to 10 schools (should have applied to more), got two interviews, one acceptance and one wait-list. Are you going to be studying for the DAT while taking classes? For me it was extremely hard to study for it during school. The good thing though is that taking it in May will allow you to do a retake soon (90 days) if you need to. I definitely recommend you go on the DAT forums and read some breakdowns to figure out what materials to study from. I recommend DAT/MATH Destroyer, Chad's Videos, Barrons AP Bio, Crack DAT PAT and topscore. Like some have said above, ace the DAT and you'll be good.

thanks for the help. i got a good amount of studying done over this one month of winter break and intend on studying during the semester. i'm going to see what i can do during the semester without sacrificing my grades. i'm currently going the the gen chem section of chad's videos. i also have DAT destroyer, kaplan bb, cliffs bio, and just ordered topscore a couple days ago. may i ask which schools you got interviews and acceptances from? thanks again

GPA 3.6 science GPA 3.7 AA 19, science 22, PA17 🙁 I hated my PA score. I think it affected my chance of getting more interviews.

yipes! you had a 3.6/3.7 and only got 1 acceptance? did you apply to ca schools?

I was kinda stupid and applied to really tough schools lol. I wasn't very knowledgeable of dental schools so i didn't pick the right ones for my DAT scores. I had low DAT scores as you have seen. and yes i did applied to one cali school (UCSF). I sent in the second app kinda late. All i can say is Dental school is darn hard to get in nowadays. It's not just about your scores anymore. it's about luck. I mean there are so many people w/ same stats. so tired of this lol.

Maybe it was because i didn't have a lot of hours too (60 +30 = 90 hours of shadowing only).

do you have any helpers, like ethnicity. im hoping to use my ethnicity as a plus to my way in.

no, ethnicity won't be a helper but like i said before, i've been doing medicinal chem research for the past couple years and i think my professor will be publishing his work soon. so i'm hoping that will be a big help.

Unless you are native americans, as of right now ethnicity doesn't really help anymore. I mean try it of course. If parents never go to college, that could also help. but being asian male or caucasian male don't really help at all.

Can someone tell me what "troll" people are referring too. I keep seeing this term "troll" popping up in predent forum lol.

a troll is someone who goes on forums and posts something that will (deliberately) cause disruption/argument with other people. they often make up stories or pretend not to know something, and they are very annoying to deal with.

"dont feed the troll" is a phrase suggesting that all members should just ignore the "troll" because he/she is just wasting everyone's time and there is no point in responding to such individuals

an example
"hi guyz ill b applyin dis yr, my gpa is 3.99 and sci is 3.97 my dats r 24/24/25 .. do u guyz think i have a good chance this yr . PLZ help lolz!"
