I am trying to make a school list for MD schools, and I wanted to see if I should take some schools off of my list (I am also applying for DO because of my low verbal score)
--Illinois resident
--28O MCAT (10PS, 6VR, 12BS)
--3.93 GPA
--Will be working at Mayo for a year doing vaccine research
--300 hours of community service in college
--150 hours of shadowing physicians
--Good leadership experience during college

Loma Linda University School of Medicine, George Washington University, Loyola University, Rosalind Franklin, Rush Medical College, University of Illinois, Indiana University (I went to school in Indiana for undergrad so that's why I am applying here), Tulane University in LA, Mayo Clinic (long shot but thought since I am working here I will apply), New York Medical College, University of Rochester, Wake Forest University, The Commonwealth medical College, Medical College of Wisconsin.

Should I add or take away any school. Thanks for the help!

Looks good. DO is essential. VR 6 will be tough.

While you're overall MCAT score itself isn't a concern (I got into 2 MD schools with an MCAT <30), the 6 could be the "kiss of death".

I'm pretty sure the majority of schools don't want any of the section scores falling below an 8 (or 7 I forget which one). It could result in no interviews.

B/c you did good in PS and BS, I'd suggest you study for VR so that you can bring that score up to at least an 8. You still have time to study (especially since you really only need to focus on one section). I had my primaries out in June, but didn't take my MCAT until August. I don't think it had any impact on receiving interviews.

But don't let anyone tell you that you can't get into an MD school with an MCAT score < 30 b/c it happens all the time.

Good luck! 👍

I specifically remember the Rush website would screen you out if you got below an 8 in any section, and I highly doubt they are alone. You should retake if your heart is set on an MD school.

Why not retake the MCAT and shore up that verbal? Take a year off if possible--it'll open up your school list tremendously. Med schools love mature candidates.

+ 1 I was going to say the same thing. There's no reason to apply to Rush with your current MCAT score[as they clearly state on their website that they won't even consider you - you are just wasting your money there]. You might have a chance with UIC and SIU (SIU if you are from Chicago), also Rosalind. But apply early. That 6 is deadly.

Why not SIU? It's one of the easiest schools to get into as far as med school according to the MSAR.

I was thinking the same thing. There stats for last year were 3.6/29. And everyone that matriculated there last year was IS. OP do you have something against that school?

SIU not only takes only IL residents, but HIGHLY favors those from central/southern IL. It's an uphill climb to get an interview there if OP is from Chicagoland or northern IL.
