It has been a long time since I've taken an organic chemistry class but from what I've read about the DAT it is possible to teach yourself AND still get a good score for OC. I'm still looking for more insight about the OC section...

Is it better to memorize main mechanisms or to be able to break every mechanism down step-by-step?

Is this section more conceptual and broad like the GC section?

What are the main areas of OC should I focus on understanding for the DAT?

Any advise would be really helpful 🙂 Thanks!!

It is conceptual, but you should also be familiar with things like mechanisms. You don't need to know every single step of every mechanism, but you should be able to make predictions based on things like electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, etc.

What are the main areas of OC? haha...ALL of it! You should know trends, acids, bases, EAS reactions, NMR, and know the DAT Destroyer Road Maps like the back of your hand. I HIGHLY recommend you start off with Chad's Videos, take detailed notes, use his outlines, take all his online quizzes at least twice, and then do Destroyer two times. Doing that will ensure you a score of 20+ for both GC and OC. Good luck

Personally, I would try to understand the concepts and similar aspects of different reactions. I would say that Elimination and Substitution reactions are key. Also, stereochemistry is very important as well.

I use Chads video as a overall review for all the OC, it helps me to outline what I need to know about the OC portion.

After that I used the destroyer to destroy my confident that I built from Chads. However, reading carefully on the mistakes I made on destroyer really helped on understand more on the ochem. It's worth it no matter how stupid u think u are while u reviewing ur mistakes.

My actual dat have straight forward questions, IR, NMR, concepts, Tricky questions. But I feel like the chads video and destroyer prep me well.one week before the test I used bootcamp as a final review and got 22, 23,22,21,23 on the OC, it gives me a comfort feeling before I go into the test.

I got a 22 on my OC and 24 on my GC by using those materials. I think I could have get higher on my OC if I didn't rush to finish the science portion for an unintended bathroom break 🙂
