Does anyone know anything about this program at arkansas? is it any good, is it recognized as a top program in surgery? looks like nothing to do there also? is this place better than a community hospital affiliated with a top university?

all info is welcome! please tell me anything u know about this place.

thanks in advance!

I graduated med school there and also grew up in arkansas. My experience obviously comes from being a student there, NOT a resident, but here's my opinion for what it's worth: you'll get solid surgical training at arkansas, but you'll work your *ss off. It's fairly old school. Of course, it may have changed with all the new duty hour nonsense that just went into effect and I think there is a different department chair now since I was there....As for living there, Little Rock has plenty to do. It's actually a decent size city with a downtown nightlife, theater, museums, a zoo, etc. There is a very nice riverside, paved running/biking trail that is free. Arkansas has tons of state parks and national forests as well, so if you like to hike, camp, canoe, fish, etc it's great. Also some good rock climbing in some parts of the state. If you like the ponies there's a horse track in Hot Springs about 1 hour away. Hope that helps.

I've heard they have a new chair there which has made a big difference. I think it's a solid program. If you work hard and do your job, I'm sure you can match into a good fellowship or be well-prepared for private practice.
