Hi. I'm wondering if there's a site or video that teaches very basic dentistry? I decided to be a predent very very late and applied in December 2013. I actually just got off the wait list and will be attending this fall, but I'm freaking out because I know almost nothing about the profession. I have very few shadowing hours. I can't name any of the instruments. I don't know the difference between plaque and caries and between an endodontist and orthodontist, and I just don't want to look stupid during my first month of D1. Anybody have any website suggestions where I can learn the basics ?

My guess is that you aren't alone. You'll learn it all in time. I can't name all the instruments or know details about dental diseases.

I suppose there is Youtube. 🙂

Do not worry about learning the little details, it comes with time.

1. Learn the names of the different specialties
2. Learn the common techniques and their abbreviations (RCT etc.) < This makes reading websites and threads easier
3. If you are really motivated, you can learn about current dental issues . (DT, access to care, different business models etc.)

After learning the basics, it will make your shadowing experience a lot more enjoyable.

Of course continue shadowing and ask yourself if you can do this for the rest of your life.

Oh yeah! Great idea from Ktran. Start browsing dentaltown an hour a day. It's a lot to dive into... and I definitely don't understand everything that is said with the different cases and whatnot... but at least I am being exposed! 😀

you know what else teaches very basic dentistry? D1.

do something else before you're forced to live nothing but dentistry when school starts.

YouTube has everything you need to learn how to do dentistry!! Lol, its a reality, you can easily learn all steps involved in fillings, extraction, surgery and much more just watching videos but it may be hard to understand the terminology used if you have no dental experience...

which dental school did you convince to accept you and how did you do it if you had very little dental related knowledge and applied in december? 😕

How do you know you want to be a dentist if you know almost nothing about the profession?

^^Just was going to ask the same thing... you applied very late in the cycle and know nothing about the profession. seems like a last minute decision to me ("oh sure. yeah, i guess ill be a dentist?"). you do realize you are putting yourself in financial suicide especially if you dont even know if you can see yourself doing this for the rest of your life

smh.

I'm just going to guess this was a troll effort. I really wanted some more details.
