Hi everyone. I'm looking for a place to live this summer (jun-aug) near the Texas Medical Center, I'll be working at MD Anderson. Any Houstonians or UTH students with advice as to where I should try to get an apt? Thanks.

Some of the most popular places for med center people to live include the Greenbriar, the Mareoneal, and the Lanesborough. You can also do a search at www.apartments.com to get some more options.

Good luck!

i would have to warn against the lanesborough. i had a pretty bad experience while living there involving a lost deposit, multiple noise complaints (unwarranted, of course) and difficult leasing staff. if you're looking to save some money, and willing to give up the corporate apartment extravaganza of condo-land, there are a lot of really cheap garage apartments and duplex places around rice university campus (very close to TMC). there should be a number of places coming available at the beginning and end of summer. if not, i'd check out the archstone apartments, marilyn manor, but stay away from holly hall.

I actually checked out archstone and wasnt very impressed with it at all. It was much more expensive per square foot than Lanesborough, Maroneal, or Greenbriar Apartments and the gym and security arrangements werent very good.. Id have to second Holly Hall, though some UTH dental students I know say their complex is pretty good (its for UTH students only though).

Im actually staying at Lanesborough because it was the cheapest. I havent heard of the above problems, though I have heard there are some bug problems if you live on the north side. The gym was really really good, and the fact they give you a washer/drier and other utilities as part of rent (which is already really cheap) is awesome. The security is pretty good too.

Your housing options basically depend on whether you have a parking space in the med center or not. As a med student I pretty much have to take the rail in, so Im limited to apartments near the rail (or on a busline). If youre a resident and they gave you parking, then you can pretty much live anywhere. While I would second living near Rice, college students can be pretty noisy (or at least, my friends and neighbors were =) ).

You may want to contact the Department of Student Affairs at UT-Houston. They keep a big book of people wanting to lease places to medical students. Their telephone number is 713-500-5160.

when i had an elective at UTH 2 years ago, the Student Affairs lady just emailed my request for a place to stay and I was contacted by a couple UTH students about a place to stay. Are you doing that 10 week research deal with MD Anderson? I know people who did that and stayed in Rice's dormitory (Rice University is across the street from the TMC)
