I'm an undergrad and was wondering which major is preferred by pharmacy schools? Do they search for (and accept more) students majoring in chemistry? Or do they like variety? Or does it not matter much to them, as long as i get the required pre-reqs completed?
See, I'm planning to major in biology and minor in mathematics (i love math!). But should i major in biochemistry and minor in biology instead? Would that be more preferable?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!

I haven't really heard one way or the other. The school I'm applying to gives you extra admission points over ppl who don't have a BA. They don't specify a preferred undergrad degree. Honestly, I don't think it matters as long as you have prereqs done. Eventually I think schools will start requiring BA, but that's just my opinion. 🙂

Most pharmacy schools don't favour majors over the other. As long as you have the pre-requisites done you are okay, but I think in biology you get more variety on which courses to choose.

Hope that helped and good luck.

As the others already explained, it does not really matter which major you choose. It should just be mentioned that having the pharmacy pre-reqs align with the classes you have to take with your major will make your life a lot easier. I have not really heard of math majors trying to get into pharmacy, but maybe some members of SDN can shine a light on that for you.

Major in whatever you want. Honestly. There is absolutely NO POINT in going into a major just to please adcoms. As long as you meet the prereqs and succeed in those classes, I highly doubt adcoms will scrutinize non-biological science majors.

Biochemistry made it so PCAT studying was minimal-none for me.

Not gonna lie, picked an easy major I enjoyed so that I could balance social life + get good grades. It worked 🙂

As said by other SDN members, most programs don't require a degree-so you could enter with a BA/BS or an AA in any subject just as long as you have the pre-reqs that that specific school requires. I have a classmate who majored in English literature and is here now.
Best bet is to go with whatever interests you, but it may help if you stay within the science field since that is what you'll end up studying in pharmacy school anyway.

Good luck with your studies!
