My computer is acting weird lately. Sometimes when i'm working on something it would just restart without prompting me. What can i do about it?

i'm running xp home edition. it's a hp laptop.

Check if there are any errors logged in your event viewer.
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System Log

Is something happening around the time of your restart?

Have you always had this problem or it just started recently?

Do this: Start->All programsAccessories-> System Tools->System Restore. This program will restore your windows state to the previous good known configuration. You can even go back to the very first installation date.

Try this and let us know how it goes

it started about a month ago

right click my computer, go to properties --> advanced --> startup & recovery --> settings --> untick the box that says "automatically restart" under system failure. It's a stupid WinXP setting that doesn't let you see what the error is...it just reboots.

At least now when it happens you'll probably get an error message. When it happens, copy the whole thing down and post it.
