hi guys! i'm getting ready to apply (along with everyone else here, ha ha) on june 1st, and i'm trying to figure out which schools to keep on my list. i figure i should apply to 9 or 10 schools. on top of 5 schools i'm definitely applying to, the ones i'm really not sure about are public schools where i'm an out of stater. any suggestions?
schools i'm not sure about:
ohsu
uw
colorado
maryland
columbia
michigan

thanks so much!

A quick look at your stats and they look great... I would advise you (if you haven't already) to augment those great grades and scores with as much shadowing and direct dental experience as you can.

In the end, we are just as much hands on clinicians as we are scientists and you'll need both great scores and good clinical sense to achieve greatness in this field.

Maryland is very out-of-state friendly (>40% of each class). I'd consider it as a strong option as its a great school and students are very happy here. Always consider out-of-state costs/travel time (are you east coast vs. west coast?), regardless of the program. PM me if you have specific questions about the program!

thanks for the shadowing advice! just wanted to let you know that i've done a bunch of shadowing in clinics / private practice over the past 4 years. i don't want you to think i'm just a rogue pre-med! =)

I would take off OHSU and tack on UCSF. The director of admissions said that they treat out-of-staters the same as CA residents, just that CA residents have a lower GPA minimum requirement to get a secondary.

Considering that you are a CA resident you should load up on Cali schools, they have a bunch. I would advise not applying to either OHSU, Colorado, and maybe taking UW off the list (although with your stats you would have a good shot, but the CA resident will hurt you there).

Best of luck to you!

I am willing to bet that she'll get into every single school on her list. I've got Paypal, let's go.

You guys are severely underestimating the utter ballerness of HYP.

I've only seen like 3 or 4 dental students (in real life & SDN) who went to HYP. All of them are attending the most competitive dental schools like Harvard, Columbia, and UCLA despite having bad undergrad GPAs in the 3.2~3.3 range. This girl has a 3.85 from Yale oh my godddd are you seriousssss.

It feels good to see that our field is getting more respectable. We need more elitism in dentistry. I'm tired of my peers being losers from CSU Fullerton and SUNY Buffalo.

if this message is genuine, then thanks! it's nice to know someone has faith in my ability to get into schools, since i don't think anyone is a lock anywhere.
if this is being sarcastic, please don't judge me just based on my college. and people aren't "losers" if they go to public schools.

I was completely genuine. Modesty is overrated. I challenge you or anyone else for that matter, to find a more qualified applicant. You're my early pick for the 2009-2010 application cycle SDN Pre-Dental MVP. 👍
