Help with basic residency info please

Sorry for the ignorance with these issues but I'm a first year student who is trying to FULLY understand the match process. What is the scramble? And why would there be unfilled spots at the end of the match? Don't hospitals have enough applicants to fill there spots, why would they leave some open? Do you have to interview at all of the hospitals for all of the programs that you plan on ranking on match day?

Yes, in order for a program to consider you and rank you, you have to interview there. It's a lot of time, stress, and money.
