Hi! I just finished my sophomore year at UIC. I'm a little worried about my GPA namely, and would like some honest feedback.
I retook Orgo I and ended up getting a C, which I'm talking to my professor about because it should be a B. However, with this C I currently stand with a 3.3 GPA. I was planning on applying to MD/PhD programs, as I'm very interested in both treating patients and pursuing research.
I have worked in a mood disorders lab since I entered college, and am working on my first publication this summer on my own project that I created using data from our studies (i.e my PI did not give me this project but it was an original idea). I have a few posters so far and am on a few other posters and papers as well. I'll have great letters of rec from my PI and professors. I have 125 hours of volunteering so far and plan to continue doing 4 hours a week (including summer) until I graduate. I also have around 20 hours of shadowing so far, and definitely am going to continue on, since I know I need much more. I also am planning on doing other music related hobbies, since that is where my interests lay besides science/medicine.
I in no way want to discontinue my efforts of being a doctor, as I know that this is the career for me. However, if I raise my GPA to say a 3.5 and get a sold MCAT score, do I still have a chance of getting into a good med program? I've been looking at OHSU (top choice), UIC, Rush, UVermont, Penn State, and UPitt as my top shot school (my PI has a lot of connections here and at Columbia but I don't think my stats are good enough for either, but I'm just going to try Pitt because of their neuro program).
Sorry for the long post but thank you!
