I've been looking back over the secondaries I've already written and wanted to ask for opinions on whether or not the topics I'm writing about could fit as challenge and/or adversity examples:

for challenges:
  • responding to the obvious death of a student as an EMT, managing my own emotional response while also being responsible for the wellbeing of the younger members I was leading. talked about using my experiences on similar calls to guide my response to helping them through the stress of a traumatic experience.
  • for an executive board position I was in, dealing with not having someone to transition me into the role. made a lot of mistakes early that were very public and had negative impacts on the organization. formed a committee to help support and sought perspectives from other leaders to overhaul systems.
  • learning how to interact with kids as an EMT. being the youngest child in my family and neighborhood, not having any family living near us, no opportunities to learn how to interact with kids. messing up on my first pediatric call, seeking advice from more experienced providers, starting to work at an agency with more pediatric patients, now working in a research position that works primarily with peds

for adversity:
  • grew up in a rural town, attended school 45 minutes away and often felt isolated from my peers who all lived close to the school I attended. felt like I was burdening my family by having them drive me constantly to see friends, overcame isolation by leveraging digital connections with friends.
    • could also talk about other barriers I saw in rural communities, but these were not things that my family were directly impacted by so I don't think this would fit.
  • maybe one of the examples from challenges?

Interested in hearing if these are worth discussing or interesting, or if I should keep looking for something else. For reference, some of the prompts I've used these examples for are:

Please describe a challenge you faced and how you addressed it. (Max 1525 characters)

Reflect on a non-academic situation when you had to change course, and how you did so. (Max 3000 characters)

As medical students and future physicians, you are faced with many uncertain situations. Please describe a situation when you were asked to do something that you felt unprepared for. How did you handle it? (Max 400 words)

What makes you a unique individual? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned from your experiences? (Max 750 characters)
