I'm already taking 4 other courses, and I was wondering which of these I should take:

  • Biology of Organisms with lab, which is basically general biology (has a lot of plants and animals). The health professions advisers told me I shouldn't take it because I placed out of it with AP credits, but I forgot everything and want to score well on the MCAT.
  • Genetics with no lab. I'm worried because this doesn't have a lab and most places require "General Biology with lab." I got a 5 in AP Bio so I place into this class.

I already took a semester of bio (Intro to Cellular and Molecular Bio) with lab, so I need at least one more bio course.

I'm also worried about USC which asks for a year of bio w/ lab and another mol bio course (and Biochem). If I take just genetics, wouldn't I be a semester short?

If you're thinking in terms of MCAT I hear Genetics is quite heavy

If you are looking at the basic pre-req's most schools require a year of biology courses with labs. If you want to do well on the MCAT you should probably consider taking additional biology courses, such as phsyiology, even if you are not a science major.

Honestly why not do both?

Chances are you are going to need a full year of Bio w/ labs (typically Bio 1 and 2, not sure what those are considered to be at your school). But even though you got a 5 on AP Bio and received college credit for it you really need to check with some med schools to see if THEY will accept that AP credit as Bio credit, don't be surprised if they don't.

So really, take whatever your school has for General Bio 1 and 2 (w/ labs), and then I'd also recommend taking Genetics. Again, you need to check with some med schools that you are interested in because some may require courses like Biochem and/or Genetics while some just recommend them.

Actually I just made my schedule and I don't think I'll be able to handle 6 classes. Each class is about 15 hours worth of work per week...
