Hey,

I'm currently a junior in high school and have been wanting to become a doctor for a long while now. I decided that I wanted to start getting serious about this now as choosing a college and my major are becoming important considerations. I've owned and operated my own computer business (network, application development) for some time and initially wanted to go into Computer Technology or Computer Engineering. I wondered what you all thought of the possibility of going to a school with a strong science reputation and majoring in Computer Technology or Engineering and also taking the core required pre-med courses. This seems like a good route to take as I would have a solid career choice either way (if I decided not to pursue medicine further.) Please advise! Also, if anyone would be able to get me some information on some schools that would have high medical school acceptance rates in Ohio, that would be great. Thanks to all in advance!

CS people/engineers tend to do pretty well in the med school application process 'cause their GPAs really mean something, they tend to be good analytical thinkers, and usually do pretty well on the MCAT. It's a fine idea, but you might want to look into the logistics of fulfilling the pre med requirements with the sort of full course load that you'd be expected to take.

Hi,

It is very possible to take the basic premed course requirements as well as major in Comp E, so you have an option to go either way. Your view on things will change as you get into college, I'm sure of it. Also, for college, your state school should be fine, or a university like OSU is perfect for a premed. Getting into medical school depends on number of factors including grades, MCAT scores, and extracuriculars, but your school is not the most important one of those factors, and in many cases may be irrelevant.
