Hello SDN,

I've been writing poetry for quite a long time. I was wondering, is there some place on the med application I would be able to attach some of my poems? Any suggestions as to how to get them to the admissions committees would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You will not send in your poetry with your application. You can, and should, mention it as one of your activities. If you get an interview you may have the opportunity to expound more on the subject. Do not expect to share your peotry with the adcom.

I highly doubt that they are going to take the time out of their schedule to read your poem. You can include it in your activities but I doubt that your poetry skills will come up during an interview.
Interviewer: Oh, Rednaws, I see you write poetry. Can you please let us hear some?
You: *standing with one foot on their desk* "Medical school is like the east sun, rising yet setting at the same time. My heart feels like a dark swan with no eyelids...lost! Lost in a cloud of.... (Interviewer interrupts)
Thanks for coming, you know the way out. *interviewer shouting*NEXT!

I write poetry too. I think it would look better and might come up in the interview if you have publications.
Either that, or you can serenade her. (hopefully you get a female adcom)

Actually, I put down on my amcas that I write short fiction for fun, and one of my interviewers last week had actually tracked down the journal I write for and read one of my stories, then shared his thoughts on it with me 😱

So yeah. Most adcom members won't go into too much detail on your hobbies, but you never know when you'll randomly hit a chord with someone...

Edit:don't actually attach a poem or put one in the descriptions, but if you've published anything, at least give enough info so that they can find it, like magazine title or whatever...

You should submit your poetry to a poetry contest and win it. Then it will be an even better EC! 😎

*ahem

I agree with what others have said,
Although your application will indeed be read,
It's best not to provide your poetry, but instead,
Describe its impact/importance, you silly pre-med.
