I've worked full time during the summer and part time during semester in a research lab. I've asked the head of the research department for a LOR and he suggested that I write one and he will review and sign it.

I have no idea on how to go about writing the LOR. All the LOR's I gotten to date, I've waived my right to see them. I've reviewed some of the helpful hints for LOR writers, but that has not really helped.

If anyone has any advice, has had a similiar circumstance, or has an LOR that I can perhaps use as a reference I would appreciate assistance.

A professor asked me to do the same thing once. It's difficult; don't be too modest, but also be truthful. Try and write things that your professor would actually know about you. Play up the strong points you think will get you accepted.

My guess is that it's highly likely he will change what you write somehow. I doubt the submitted letter will be exactly what you wrote.

wow .. its not really a LOR if u write 1 lol. but I would have loved to write 1 for my self.

I went through a similar situation not for med school apps though. I made myself look like a super hero and didn't hold out at all. Remember your selling yourself so why not go all out. Be truthful but don't be afraid to embellish. Plus it will most likely get toned down/ he'll add an introduction of himself. If you have the chance take it, this is a competitive process why sell yourself short.

Thanks all for the help and advise.

Does anyone have a letter that I can have a look at. I've started one covering what I do, my interactions with others in the lab, able to take direction and work independently, but that is about all I can come up with.

Am I brain dead?
