Hello All,

I just finished my Junior year at a large state school as a Finance major. I am currently interning at an Investment Bank and, although I find my work semi-interesting, I am realizing that this might not be the right place for me. Growing up around the medical field (both of my parents are physicians) I have always kept the option in the back of my mind but never really explored the it in great detail until recently, when my mother fell extremely ill and spent a week in the ICU. As I visited her in the hospital, I watched in awe as the doctors there literally saved my mom's life. I have always had a strong desire to help people, and I couldn't help but think to myself right then and there that I could do this and actually make a difference in the world instead of working in Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint all day.

I understand how much work it would be to make such a radical change, but I am confident I could do it. I have a 3.8 GPA, got a 32 on the ACT, and excelled in my Bio/Chem classes in high school. I am planning on talking with my academic adviser soon as far as classes I would need to take, but was just hoping to get some feedback from some of the people here who have gone through the process and obviously know what it takes. Thanks in advance for your help!

Cool. I could never stomach being a business man either. I'd rather go back to fueling tugboats on the San Francisco bay for 10 bucks/hr. And be a king.

But the situation is not so untraditional. You've had a change of major. For a very personal reason based on an insight into life. I say this only because you might get more from the heavily frequented pre-allo forum. Unless you used to carry amps for metalica or had 4 kids before you turned 22. Or were conceived backstage after a Cheech and Chong show. And resulted in a dispermic embryo from both cheech and chong. The perfect comedic mosaic triploidy syndrome baby. ...we're generally unmoved.

But as I am turining over new helpful friendly leaves, here goes:

You need General chem 1,2. Organic chem 1,2. General biology 1,2. And physics 1, 2. All for science majors. Not for engineers. Unless you're a sadist. Physics first is optimal as it gets you tracking physical phenomenon with math. Then Gen chem. They make good bed partners. Biology will be a rereq for upper division bio courses--which are highly recommended for your own benefit. But not necessary.

Finish you finance degree. Doctors need business saavy people. Take your time. Take an extra year. Don't freak. I'm 37. Not saying you want to cop all my geriatric moves. But the point is. Don't worry. You'll get there when you're ready.

Your gpa is sweet. Keep at it.

You need to start developing your transitional epiphanous street creds with doing all the lovely things young lads do to prove their serious suitors. Volunteering medically. blah-blah. You're a smart kid. Do some reading. Start with the stickies in the pre-allo.

Stay golden. Pony boy. Stay golden.

OP: For scheduling reasons, I'd recommend Gen Chem first because typically Gen Chem I & II are prereqs for OChem. If you're school does require these as prereqs, then disregard.
