help with possible interview question

"Your best friend's 15yr old daughter tells you she is pregnant what do you do?"

If asked this question are the schools hoping your answer will be to advise/counsel her and refer her to another pharmacist to eliminate any bias of favoritism? 😕

What exactly does the interviewer expect and want to see? please offer suggestions and opinions.

I presume this happens at work. Even at home, I'd treat it the same way.

1) You are a healthcare professional and must respect her privacy and her ability to make her own decisions, regardless of her age.

(Note: Group Health keeps the records of those 12 and older private from parents, if you want a standard to cite.)

2) You have a responsibility as a healthcare provider that supercedes personal relationships.

3) She has obviously reached out to you. Treat her with sensitivity and let her know that you are there to provide her with information and resources she will need to make her own decision.

4) Be non-judgemental. A young woman in this situation has enough things to think about without you adding more pressure. When you judge, you do harm.

5) Ask her if there is anything she would like to talk to you about. This would allow her the chance to reach out if there are any extenuating circumstances that she may need counseling for. She trusts you, so you are in the best position to ask this question.

Personally, I would stop short of putting myself in the position of taking her to appointments or getting involved that way. That could get messy and it goes a bit beyond what I would be comfortable doing while my best friend didn't know the situation. I guess I would also find out if she wanted to let her mom know or not.

As the mother of a 15 year old girl, I agree for the most part, but I would definitely do all I could to encourage her to talk to her mother. Not to the point of losing her confidence, though. I probably would be stupid enough to agree to go with her when she told her if she wanted me to. 🙄
