I' new to this site. I have a bachelors degree in English. I would like to go back to school to take my prerequisites for pharm school. My problem is that I have an extremely difficult time with bio and chem classes but I do find the interesting. Is anyone out there struggling with these or that did struggle with them (as in requiring a tutor)that then mad it into pharm school. I'm just wondering if its possible to not like these classes but still make it. Sorry for rambling and thanks for any help.

I know people at my University who came back after getting their degrees and who are pre-pharmacy now. They basically had to retake everything like chemistry 101, biology 1, etc...I mean it was hard for them at first to re-adgjust to taking those kind of classes, but they ended up doing pretty well. Just give it a try and try not to take more than like 4 classes your first semester. Good luck!!

You might not like the classes, but it's crucial to like them at least a little bit. In general, people do well with things that they enjoy. I would say that if pharmacy is really something that you want to do, just buckle down and get the pre-reqs done. If you know that you're probably gonna struggle a little bit in the courses, get a tutor to help you out. Just remember to be confident in your ability to do well in the classes and you'll be fine. Good Luck! 🙂

I don't think that you have to be a geek to succeed in these courses. Once you reach a certain level the courses somewhat mesh together.

If you work hard with study groups and tutors there should not be a problem. It will get easier once you find your niche.

i don't understand how you want to become a pharmacist but you don't like the sciences..

you're going to be taking 2 years of prerequisites that are 95% sciences...and then another 4 years of pharmacy school in which the sciences only get harder and more complicated...and then the rest of your life...which will revolve around the sciences

you can make it if you study hard (duh!) but will you be happy with what you know? i hope you're not going into it just for the money..

I totally aggree with NERV! If you don't like science, why would u become a pharmacist? I don't mean to offend you but do u know what becoming a pharmacist entails? I honestly don't think you do because if you don't like science, more than likely, you will not like being a pharmacist. If I were you, I would volunteer in a pharmacy and research the profession before jumping back into school to study for a profession that you THINK you know what they do.

Although the role of a pharmacist is expanding and can range from retail to clinicial to industrial to who knows what.... at the end of the day, SCIENTIFIC KNowledge is a MUST.

When I read the original post, I assumed that he was interested in the sciences, but didn't like them because he always did poorly in those type of classes.

I could be wrong, but I think that if he was better at the classes (changing study habits, getting a tutor, etc) he would definitely like the sciences more.

I believe this time round "mastif" will do well in his sciences because I'm sure he's determine to do better and motivated to attend pharmacy school; time off with positive reflection can help many get back on track and focused. My advise, don't associate your past with what's ahead👍

I think if you REALLY work at it (study hard, get a tutor, go to office hours, etc.) then you can make it. However, it is my opinion that you really think about whether or not you WANT to do this. Pharmacy school is a lot of chemistry and biology. If you have a hard time with general and organic chemistry, then it will only get worse when you get to pharmacokinetics, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, etc.

Best of luck in whatever you decide!

This is very true! Often times, it is necessary to fail first before you can succeed.

Thanks for all the replies. I am interested in sciences I have just always done poorly in them.I liken it to skiing for me I love to ski but I'm horrible at it. I have taken lessons for 10yrs but am still on either the bunny hill or novice runs but I still love it. I am not looking into pharmacy for money I happen to be very fortunate and blessed and don't need to work. I became interested in being a pharmacist after dealing very closely with Scrafts pharmacy whose specialty is infertility. I saw then that I could work in the medical field and help others without dealing with blood ect... Anyway my question is this, is not getting all A's in something you enjoy enough to get accepted to a pharm school.

Absolutely! There are so many things that the admissions committees look at besides grades. I got in with a 3.5 GPA (I had 2 F's and a few C's).

^what he said. but try and keep your science gpa up! i got in with a pharmcas cumulative gpa of 3.08 but my science gpa was a 3.47--i'm not as competative as others as you can see

ahh...your wordplay is confusing.
you don't liek them because they are hard--but you are interested

that's like me and my neuroscience class. probably one of the most interesting bio classes i have ever taken but the professor was a tool, therefore i did not like the class..sigh.

anyways my advice for you is to learn how to filter what's necessary and what's not really necessary for the exams. learn the major points of that class and keep it in your head for future classes! chances are it will show up in your next bio class.

also, find a comfortable formula for studying...i know a lot of people tend to re-write their notes to get it into their heads. try this and see if it works for you. it's a lot of writing but hey it works for some of us.

nerv dont be so quick to judge (referring to your 1st post)

Hey Mastif! Well I can sorta relate..i hated gchem. I kinda liked Ochem once I got the hang of it...and I loved bio, cuz though it was difficult, it was something I could apply to my everyday life. Well in my opinion, to do well in Gchem all it is is practice. Doing practice problems from different sources until you understand the problem and how to solve it and also deviations of the problems, is the best way to go about gchem. Bio is definitely something that is a composite of memorizing, understanding, and applying. I learned that recording my professors lecture and listening to them over and over really helped me in Biology. Also, reading the chapters and doing the virtual animated exercises really helped me as well. If you have a passion for pharmacy, then don't let a few subjects here and there get you down. You can do it! Good luck 🙂

mastif1 , I know how you feel because I am floating in the same boat at the moment. I have a BS in Mass Communications/PR from 1999, and I too, avoided math/science back then since I didn't need them for my degree. I too, find them fascinating, just difficult for me to 'grasp onto' sometimes. This semester finds me going back to take my Pre-Pharm pre-reqs (part time) after being out of college for almost 10 years. I am taking General Biology this semester and man, its hard for me to recall even how to operate a microscope! (Let's just say I have not used once since HS Bio...um...in 1993) But, I think the sciences interest me a lot more (I started watching Discovery and TLC the past few years and interestingly enough, have learned much info from shows!). Also, as an older student (sad to say 'older' as a 31-yr old lol), I am waaaayyy more serious/focused. I email my professors questions all the time and ask for help. I look up info on the internet. I seek help from sites like this. I am determined to succeed in Pharmacy or medicine (or whatever I decide to pursue)..and I think that makes up for my poor math/science studies years ago. 😳
