Planning on applying to MD – this last year was a reinvention year as I prepared for a MCAT retake (with mixed results)
  • State/Country of Residence: Ohio (but grew up in MN)
  • Undergraduate Major: Math major with a Chem minor, Scientific Computing concentration
  • cGPA: 3.4/ sGPA: 3.4 (no excuse but was sick for most of an academic year)
  • MCAT Score(s): 509 (125, 127, 128, 129) -this was a retake from a year ago - first section was rough nd then I recovered.
  • Research Experience: 2,800 hours - two years as an undergrad and then full time with a T20 school clinical research/NIH basic science research lab – great projects after graduation – this has been my reinvention year (so far)
  • Publications/Abstracts/Posters: A total of 6:
    • 3 as an undergrad
    • 3 professionally – all presented at a national conference (5th, 2nd, and 3rd authors on these)
  • Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer): 150+ hours clinical volunteering
  • Physician Shadowing: 100+ hours of shadowing
  • Non-Clinical Volunteering: 1300+ hours (community outreach, animal shelters, hospice, and mentoring).
  • Other ECs: D3 varsity sports in college for 3.5 years, plus another 4 years of club sports
As I see it - my options are:

Option 1: Apply MD
Option 2: Re-take MCAT – see when I can get that in and then decide what cycle
Option 3: Not sure…

Any thoughts?

Suggestions on my adding to the school list?
  • In State
    • Case Western
    • Toledo
    • Cincinnati
    • Northeast Ohio
    • Wright State University
    • Ohio State
  • In State (Lived there through college)
    • Minnesota
  • Special Interest
    • Carle (Math and Engineering)
Thanks for your help!

You could add these schools to your list:
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Albany
New York Medical College
Seton Hall
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
West Virginia
George Washington
NOVA MD
TCU-UNT
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
The GPA-MCAT grid shows you have ~50% chance for a MD acceptance so you should apply to DO schools also. I suggest these:
OU-HCOM
DMU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
MU-COM
LECOM (all schools)
PCOM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
CUSOM
VCOM (all schools except Monroe)
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
Your MCAT of 509 is not the main weakness of your application. It is your GPA of 3.4 .
